Bengals vs Ravens NFL Week 7 Preview
The early slate this week was supposed to feature a marquee matchup between Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson, but with injuries mounting, this game loses a ton of its luster.
The Bengals' offense has not been particularly explosive this season. Burrow has been forced into a dink-and-dunk rhythm, taking whatever underneath routes opposing defenses will give him and slowly methodically marching down the field on long, extended drives.
Defensively, Cincinnati's defensive line is perfectly built to hem in a backup quarterback like Tyler Huntley if he gets the start again.
The Bengals are disciplined in their rushing lanes, which forces opposing offenses into predictable, tight-window throws over the middle rather than allowing them to break contain and generate chunk plays on the ground.
This brings me to my weekly filibuster on the Ravens.
The market has correctly adjusted this line, moving the Ravens to short 1.5-point home favorites, implying that Lamar Jackson is not going to play (at the time of writing).
Jackson was limping and missed practice early in the week, and while there is always a tiny chance he goes, the tea leaves suggest he will sit. That leaves Tyler Huntley under center again.
The biggest difference between this Ravens offense with Jackson versus Huntley — aside from the obvious talent gap — is that with Huntley, they don't threaten with a downfield passing attack. They play entirely within a box. Huntley relies on short slants and the run game.
To compound matters, the Ravens are also battered in the trenches. They are slated to roll out their fifth different starting offensive line combination in just seven games, with Cam Jurgens expected to start at center.
The lack of continuity will almost certainly lead to blown blocks and stalled drives.
Bengals vs Ravens Prediction, Betting Analysis
If Tyler Huntley gets another start, this total is egregiously high — my raw numbers make this game closer to 40.
Without Lamar Jackson's deep ball to Zay Flowers and company, Baltimore's offense condenses into a predictable, short-passing attack.
Even if Jackson suits up, his mobility will be limited, removing the explosive, unscripted runs that break games open.
Both of these teams will likely engage in long, methodical, time-consuming drives that end in red-zone field goals rather than quick-strike touchdowns.
Give me the Under in what should be a sluggish 23-17 type of game.
Pick: Under 48.5 (-105)
