When handicapping the NFL slate, I always go through a bunch of processes — market, injuries, spots, trenches, etc. The situational spots in Week 7 are weirdly unique.
For instance, there are no teams coming off a loss of more than one possession facing a team not in that same position — we haven't seen that happen in a single week since 1991. There are also no teams on a homestand off of a win.
Because of that, I am leaning into a situational spot I track every single week: teams playing on the road off a loss, which I like to call a "business trip."
This spot has done incredibly well this year, sitting at 21-12 against the spread (ATS). Historically, it has finished .500 ATS or better in 20 of the last 24 seasons, including seven of the last eight.
The one team I pulled out of that specific group this week is the Buccaneers.
Obviously, it's gross.
There are massive questions surrounding the Bucs — Baker Mayfield is back but he hasn't been great this season and he'll be without Emeka Egbuka. On defense, Antoine Winfield Jr. is out. There was also an illness ripping through the Bucs' clubhouse this past week.
I don't love any of that stuff.
However, when you look inside the numbers, Tampa Bay has a great on-field advantage in EPA per rush on both offense and defense.
Carolina Panthers Betting Preview: Bleak Head-to-Head Trends
The Panthers are 3-2 and coming off a road win over the Eagles, but their defensive profile is troubling, and the historical trends are against them.
The head-to-head metrics in this specific matchup heavily favor the opposing sideline.
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles has faced Bryce Young six times, and he boasts a 5-1 record.
Carolina simply does not have the defensive efficiency to take advantage of Tampa Bay's injury situation.
Buccaneers vs Panthers Prediction, Betting Analysis
Despite the illness ripping through the clubhouse and the mounting injury question marks, I love the Buccaneers' edge on the ground with their EPA per rush advantage.
I blindly trust the "business trip" spot for a road team coming off a loss (21-12 ATS this year), and Todd Bowles historically owning Bryce Young.
Give me the Bucs and the hook.
