Detroit Lions Betting Preview: Injuries Bite in Bunches

The Lions defense has vastly improved as of late, but the injury bug has once again completely decimated that side of the ball.

Star linebacker Jack Campbell went down with a scary neck injury, Kerby Joseph has looked good in practice but still isn't ready, and No. 1 cornerback DJ Reed missed practice all week and has been ruled out.

The Lions are suddenly back to a hodgepodge of highly questionable players rotating through the back end of their defense. The only thing this defense currently does well is generate quick pressure. That becomes less of a factor when facing a mobile quarterback who can buy time and extend plays outside the pocket — like Malik Willis.

It is difficult to win by margin and cover a full touchdown on the road when you are fielding a bottom-tier defense missing this many crucial pieces.

Miami Dolphins Betting Preview: Fins Trending Up

The Dolphins offense has shown some juice lately and is playing much better than the market indicates.

Since Week 5, Malik Willis ranks 12th in the NFL in adjusted EPA per play and fifth in overall Success Rate.

Miami also boasts one of the most explosive rushing attacks in the entire league, ranking No. 2 overall even when adjusting for opponent strength. Malik Willis has been using his legs more while Ollie Gordon has stepped up admirably in place of De'Von Achane.

With guard Ryan Proctor looking good to return from a concussion, the trenches will be solidified.

Lions vs Dolphins Prediction, Betting Analysis

Malik Willis has the mobility to negate Detroit's pass rush. He can buy time in the pocket and eventually hit his receivers downfield against a depleted Lions secondary.

We might also get some classic Miami rain to slow down the outdoor version of Jared Goff, which isn't nearly as good when he gets to play in a dome.

When factoring in all of Detroit's injuries on the back end, my true number on this game is closer to Lions -5.

I am happy to take a full touchdown with a Miami offense that has found a successful rhythm. After getting blown out in their first three games of the season, the Dolphins haven't lost a game by more than seven points over their last four contests.

Pick: Dolphins +7 (-110)
