Celtic will be hosting Feyenoord this week in a Group E match in this season’s Champions League. Neither side can change their position in the group in this match so it will be an interesting one to bet on.

The Scottish side is dead last in Group E with just one point and a -11 goal difference in their five matches. This has been a group stage to forget for them and I am sure their fans will be relieved that it is finally over after those run of matches.

Feyenoord are third in the group and have solidified their advancement to the Europa League knockout stage. They have played some quality matches in this group stage and will be slightly unlucky not to be advancing to the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Even though this match will not affect the position of these teams, it is still a good spot to make some money, so let’s see how to bet Celtic vs Feyenoord.

Celtic

Despite their poor Champions League form, this Celtic side have been immense in the Scottish Premiership so far. They are currently five points clear at the top of the league and have only lost 1 match all season. They have already scored 43 goals in just 17 matches and have one of the best defensive records in the league.

One of the reasons they have been so good this season is their midfield. The midfield three of O’Riley, McGregor and Hatate has been so crucial for them in picking up points this year. They are a perfectly balanced trio of speed, defensive ability and creativity. Unfortunately, they will again be without Hatate in this match and may even play a slightly weaker lineup due to the unimportance of this match for them.

Brendan Rodgers likes to set them up in a 4-3-3 formation and it has worked at times in these group stage matches. In their 2-2 draw against Atlético Madrid, they put together 0.9 xG against one of the better defensive sides in Europe. The biggest reasons this group stage has not panned out for them has been because of their injuries, suspensions and their defensive abilities.

The way Brendan Rodgers plays is very forward thinking with this Celtic squad. He likes to get men forward and control possession. This is efficient against the Scottish teams, but against the best teams in the world it leaves them vulnerable in transition, which is why they have conceded 14 goals in their five group stage matches. We will see how Brendan Rodgers sets this team up, but I anticipate more of the same defensively out of this match.

Feyenoord

Feyenoord have been one of the surprises of the group stage so far. Their results have not completely gone their way, but if you look at some of the underlying metrics, they were more than deserving of advancing to the knockout stage this year.

They lost three matches in the group this year, one to Lazio and two to Atlético Madrid. In those three losses, their combined xG was 4.9, while their combined xGA was 3.2. They were playing some very good football and, in another universe, could have come top in this group. Unfortunately, they only have six matches to ensure their spot in the knockout stage, which they were unable to do.

One of the reasons they have been a genuine elite side this year has been their attacking play. Santiago Giménez has been the star man of this team. He has scored 18 goals already in the Eredivisie, out-performing his xG number by almost four goals. That is an extremely impressive number, but also tells us that there is likely some regression coming.

Feyenoord play in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system depending on the opponent. Against stronger opposition they play almost a 4-5-1 and allow for some more defensive help of their wingers, which they may do in this match as Celtic prefer to have control of the ball. It is unclear what lineup they will be playing in this one as they are already heading to Europa League, but it will matter for betting purposes.

Celtic vs Feyenoord

Prediction

There is no ways around it, Feyenoord are the better side in this match. They are in a stronger league and have performed at a much higher level in this group stage. Because this match does not mean much to either side in the grand scheme of things, it makes sense to back the side with more quality, which in this case is Feyenoord.

Because of this, I will be taking Feyenoord moneyline at +120 as I see value in this, even though they are away from home. Celtic have looked far too vulnerable in every match to bet on them, and Feyenoord have been unlucky not to gain a few more points out of these matches.

Once again, it does depend on the lineups that both sides put out, but because of the quality that Feyenoord have at their disposal, I like the play at +120.

Pick: Feyenoord ML (+120 via bet365)
