Closing out the Premier League season, Manchester United look to secure third in the table with a victory over Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Red Devils clinched their place in the Champions League next season with the midweek victory over Chelsea, leaving them with not much to play for in this match before the FA Cup final next weekend.
Meanwhile, the Cottagers have had an impressive return to the EPL this season, finishing in the top half of the table in 10th.
On the surface, this game doesn’t mean much for either club, but I do think there are some situational advantages that help the visitors in this fixture.
Man United Closing Out Impressive Season
In his first season in the EPL, manager Erik ten Hag already has a trophy by winning the Carabao Cup, and he has an opportunity to add another by defeating Manchester City at Wembley next weekend.
One of the key reasons for the success in his debut campaign has been the team’s form at Old Trafford, where United have won 14 of 18 league matches to go along with just one loss.
At home this season, the Red Devils have posted a +20.3 xGDiff, according to fbref.com, which is much better than the -4.3 mark on the road.
The big question is how much will the team care about this final fixture, especially with what is upcoming the following week.
Fulham Finishing One of Their Best Campaigns.
This has been a remarkable season for manager Marco Silva in his first Premier League campaign with Fulham.
Silva has guided his side to the most away wins for the club in the English top flight, and they can eclipse their best-ever point tally with a victory in this one.
The key contributor has been striker Aleksandar Mitrović, who has found the back of the net on 14 occasions in 23 games. It is his best mark in the EPL, and it comes a year after setting the goal-scoring record in the Championship with 43 goals.
Once you add the fact that Mitrović was suspended for eight games for an incident against United in a cup match, it makes you wonder where Fulham may have finished had that not happened.
Manchester United vs Fulham Pick
If you were just looking at the metrics of both teams, it would lead you to bet on a United side that has been impressive at home. However, all of the motivational and situational factors are with Fulham.
So, my best bet is to back the visitors on a spread of +1 at +103 odds, which I would play to -110.
For starters, the Red Devils had to play a midweek match, where they played all of their starters and clinched their spot in the UCL. Why would they risk their key stars when they have the chance to stop their rivals from completing the treble next weekend?
Meanwhile, Fulham will be fully rested and looking for revenge after what happened at this same ground in the FA Cup quarterfinals, where they gave up a late penalty and had three red cards.
Once you add in the club looking to set a new record point tally in the EPL, you will not be seeing rotation for the Cottagers in this one.
You could potentially wait for the lineups to come out, but the number will be long gone if ten Hag does put out a lineup of second-teamers.
I also like a look at Mitrović to score anytime at +187 odds as he has three goals in his last two games since returning from suspension. He will be desperate to right the wrong of what happened on his last trip to Old Trafford.
