Aryna Sabalenka Preview
Sabalenka is a 28-year-old Belarusian who's ranked No. 1 in the WTA.
Sabalenka remains the best player in the world, even if the last few months have been complicated for her. Her top ranking is becoming increasingly shaky, as the gap between her and Elena Rybakina has decreased to about 500 points. (The good news for Sabalenka is Rybakina is also in poor form.)
While the women's circuit seems open right now, I expect Sabalenka to have a very good summer. She's excellent on hard courts (definitely her best surface), and the goal is clear: a new trophy at the US Open. She's already won twice in New York, with two other major titles coming at the Australian Open.
That doesn't necessarily mean she's weak on clay or grass, but she doesn't seem as effective and consistent overall.
Sabalenka is a complete player, as she has one of the best serves in the world, rarely getting broken. She's very aggressive on the court, constantly puts pressure on return and limits the reaction time of her opponents. She's also very strong mentally, which is intimidating for her opponents.
However, what happened in the last two months has affected her quite a bit. I don't know if she still has the same confidence, but her motivation has certainly remained high.
She started this season with a final at the Australian Open, losing to Rybakina. She then played excellent at two 1000 hard court events, winning Indian Wells and Miami.
Unfortunately for her, a sudden decline followed. At Roland Garros, she lost in the quarters to Diana Shnaider, even though she completely controlled that match. She collapsed, losing the decisive set 0-6.
On grass, she lost 0-6 again in Berlin to Jessica Pegula. Then at Wimbledon, she lost in the fourth round to Naomi Osaka.
Returning to the hard courts is a welcomed sight, so I expect her to regroup in Toronto.
Moyuka Uchijima Preview
Uchijima is a 24-year-old Japanese player who's ranked 107th in the WTA rankings.
Uchijima isn't as weak as the rankings show, though. The fact that she dropped out of the world's top 100 means she'll have to qualify for the US Open, as she did in Toronto.
However, I'm almost convinced that she'll climb the rankings in the coming months. She's a pretty solid athlete, reaching 47th place in the world last season.
Uchijima is tall, but she still has room for improvement. She's not very efficient from the baseline, even if she can easily take control of points. In addition, she has an above average serve.
She hasn't had a very good season in 2026, though. She has trophies in Antalya and Saint Malo — both on clay — but she's done nothing relevant in important tournaments. In fact, she came into this event in poor form, recently having eight failures in nine games.
In the qualifiers in Toronto, she got past Himeno Sakatsume, and in the main draw, she easily defeated Cristina Bucșa while serving quite well.
However, on Tuesday, she faces a much more difficult task.
Sabalenka vs Uchijima Predictions, Betting Analysis
Sabalenka is coming off a terrible spring, losing sets 0-6 to Shnaider and Pegula and then being eliminated early from Wimbledon.
However, I expect her to look much better on hard courts. It's her favorite surface and she's very motivated to prevail again at the US Open.
Uchijima came to this event in extremely poor form, at one point having eight loses in nine matches. However, in the two matches she's already played here, she's looked solid. Against Bucsa, she didn't lose a set, but she had problems on her second serve.
I think it'll be difficult for her to hold against Sabalenka, who will put constant pressure on her serve.
Target the alternate total.
