  • The 2020 CJ Cup — taking place at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas this year — has a loaded field.
  • Joshua Perry broke down the tournament and shared his betting card ahead of Thursday's tee times.

We were close at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open last week, but Matthew Wolff's bid came up just short in a three-man playoff.

Now, it's on to the CJ Cup, which will keep the PGA TOUR in Las Vegas for a second straight week. This year's tournament is being held at Shadow Creek instead of South Korea because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The CJ Cup will resemble a World Golf Championship event with 78 players and no cut. Even though the tournament isn't taking place in Korea this season, the exemptions handed out to the top players on the KPGA are still in effect, so we'll see a few players from that tour take the final few places in the field.

The Course

Shadow Creek will host a PGA event for the first time. It's a relative unknown to most golf fans. We've only seen it for the The Match: Tiger vs. Phil exhibition in 2018.

It's a long course, measuring just over 7,500 yards for a par 72, but the altitude in Las Vegas will make it play a touch shorter than that distance. It's also got plenty of water in play, so we'll need to find a good combo of length and precision this week.

The Favorites

Editor's Note: Dustin Johnson has withdrawn from the 2020 CJ Cup after a positive COVID test.

We've got a strong group at the top of the board this week. At FanDuel, Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm opened as co-favorites as +1000. With Johnson now out, Rahm is the sole favorite across the board.

Justin Thomas (+1200 on DraftKings) and Rory McIlroy (+1400) are right behind them. Here are two more solid candidates to take down the title if they drive it well. Of the three times the events been held, Thomas has won twice, albeit at Nine Bridges in Korea both times.

Xander Schauffele wraps up this range at +1400 and is known to play well in these limited-field events.

I like to pick one guy near the top of the board in these smaller fields, and I'll do that by going back to Matthew Wolff at +2200 on DraftKings. The 21-year-old's length should benefit him this week, and the game is clearly in good enough shape to win after back-to-back runner up finishes at the U.S. Open and Shriners.

The Mid-Tier

With Wolff at the top, I'll be more limited in this area, but I'll take a chance with Joaquinn Niemann at +6600 on DraftKings. Niemann finished 13th last week at TPC Summerlin on a course that tends to benefit players with stronger short games. This week should be more of a tee-to-green test, which should fit his strengths better.

The Longshots

No outrights for me in this range. I'm seeing too many good names at the top who are all in a solid run of form. I'd lean toward a top 10 or 20 play on Corey Conners, who is at +12500 in the outright market on DraftKings. Similar to Niemann, this is likely to be a strong test from tee to green where his ball striking could help him toward a solid finish.

The CJ Cup card

  • Matthew Wolff +2200 (1.65 units)
  • Joaquin Niemann +6600 (.5 units)

Total Stake 2.15 units
