  • For the second straight year, Las Vegas plays host to THE CJ CUP on the PGA TOUR.
  • Originally held in Korea but moved because of the pandemic, some of the world's best golfers will be in action this week.
  • Joshua Perry picks out three that he sees value in, delivering his pre-tournament breakdown below.

The second of the PGA TOUR's two-week stay in Las Vegas gets going this week with the CJ CUP.

The event has found a temporary home here for a couple of seasons since the pandemic has made traveling to South Korea more difficult.

After Shadow Creek played host last year, we'll see a new stop for the TOUR at the Summit Club this time around.

The Course

The Summit Club measures 7,431 yards for a par-72. There's water in play on seven holes, but there doesn't appear to be too much overall here that's going to keep these players from going low.

If the wind is down, we'll probably see a score in the 20-under par range be necessary again this week to claim the title.

The course was designed by Tom Fazio, who's also had a hand in courses like Shadow Creek, Firestone and Quail Hollow.

The Favorites

Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas all open around the +1200 range to top the board. It's the first start for each since the victorious week at the Ryder Cup three weeks ago. They've had a couple weeks to recover from their celebrations and should be ready to go this week.

Of the three, I'd probably keep my eye on Thomas, who has wins at Firestone and Quail Hollow.

Collin Morikawa and Rory McIlroy are next in line at around +1600 and like the aforementioned trio, are making their first appearance since the Ryder Cup. McIlroy is another guy who has had success on Fazio courses, winning at Quail Hollow this year.

We find guys like Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen in the +2000s range. I'm tempted to open up my card here for once, but instead, I'll go with Viktor Hovland at +2800 on BetMGM.

Hovland finished first last week in Strokes Gained: Ball Striking, gaining over 10 shots on the field but managed to lose nearly nine strokes around the green. He's had short game problems in the past, but even for him, that number is insanely high.

He's still looking for a win on Tour with the big guns present, so I'll take a chance on him here in a smaller field knowing that the driver and irons are dialed in where they need to be to contend this week.

Bet Viktor Hovland at BetMGM and get a risk-free bet up to $1,000.

The Mid-Tier

I'll open this range with Tyrrell Hatton at +4200 on FanDuel. He's coming off a second-place finish a couple weeks back at the Alfred Dunhill Links in Scotland. That's been a good spot for him in his career, and I think he might be able to carry that good result forward for the rest of the year.

For whatever reason, this tends to be the part of the season when Hatton rounds into form in Europe. Five of his six career wins have been in October or November, so I'll take a chance he can continue that trend stateside.

Bet Tyrrell Hatton at FanDuel and get a $1,000 risk-free bet.

The Longshots

I'll take one shot in the dark here with Chris Kirk at 150/1 on DraftKings. Kirk doesn't have a high-end finish lately, but he's been playing solidly, gaining ground on approach pretty much every week.

The rest of the game has been spotty, but Kirk has had events during which he's been able gain ground elsewhere in recent months so it's another one of those spots where if he can line up the rest of the game with some solid approach numbers, he could sneak out a top-10 finish.

Bet Chris Kirk at DraftKings and get a $1,000 sign-up bonus.

The CJ CUP Card

  • Viktor Hovland +2800 (1.18 units)
  • Tyrrell Hatton +4200 (.79 units)
  • Chris Kirk +15000 (.22 units)

Total Stake: 2.19 units
