2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship Preview

The PGA Tour heads to Memphis, Tennessee for the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind following Lucas Glover's victory at the Wyndham Championship. This is the first week of the FedExCup Playoffs with just 70 players in the field before the top 50 advance to next week's BMW Championship in Chicago, and the final 30 will advance to the TOUR Championship in two weeks in Atlanta.

Unfortunately, the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship winner, Will Zalatoris, will not be in the field this week as he recovers from a back injury that has held him out since March.

Scottie Scheffler, who enters second on the FedExCup Points List, is the tournament betting favorite at open on Monday morning at bet365 at +800. As of Tuesday early afternoon, Scheffler's odds have shortened to +650.

The Texas Longhorn snapped his streak of seven consecutive top-five finishes in his last start (a T23 at The Open Championship), which was also his first finish outside the top 12 of a tournament since October 2022. Scheffler has top-15 finishes in two of his last three starts at TPC Southwind, but he did miss the cut here last year (which was also his most recent missed cut).

Rory McIlroy opened just behind Scheffler at +850 on the odds board, but his odds have lengthened to +950 as of Tuesday afternoon. The Northern Irishman has recorded top-nine finishes his last seven starts, including a T6 at The Open and a win at the Genesis Scottish Open in his previous two starts.

Like Scheffler, McIlroy also missed the cut here in 2022, but the three-time FedExCup winner also has a pair of top-seven finishes at TPC Southwind in six starts. McIlroy is third in the FedExCup standings entering the Playoffs as he looks to retain possession of the FedExCup.

Jon Rahm opened with the third-shortest outright odds to win the 2023 FedEx St. Jude Championship at +950 as he is only one of three players with outright odds shorter than 17-1. His odds have shortened to +850 as of Tuesday at noon ET as he now has the second-shortest outright odds.

Rahm, the FedExCup Points List leader entering the playoffs, leads all PGA Tour golfers with four wins this year. He is coming off of a T2 at The Open in his last start and has two top-seven finishes in three starts at TPC Southwind, including a T5 here last year. Like Scheffler, Rahm is looking to hoist the FedExCup for the first time in his career at the conclusion of this year's playoffs.

2021 FedExCup winner Patrick Cantlay has the fourth-shortest outright odds this week at +1700. While the former UCLA Bruin has won at least one tournament in each of the last two FedExCup Playoffs, he has yet to crack the top 10 in four starts at TPC Southwind. He is the highest-ranked player in the FedExCup Standings (13th) who has not won yet on the PGA Tour this season, but he does have six top-five finishes on Tour over this span.

Xander Schauffele is the final player with odds shorter than 20/1 at open this week at +1900 at bet365. The San Diego State Aztec enters 16th in the FedExCup Standings and is the second-highest player in the FedExCup without a win (behind the aforementioned Cantlay). Schauffele leads the Tour with 30 consecutive cuts made, spanning all the way back to the 2022 Masters. He has a T6 at TPC Southwind in 2020 among five starts here and finished T57 most recently in 2022.

Viktor Hovland opened with the sixth-shortest odds to win outright on Monday morning at +2200, and his odds have shortened to +1900 as of Tuesday afternoon. The Norwegian has recorded seven consecutive top-30 finishes, including a win at the Memorial Tournament.

Along with McIlroy and Cantlay, Jordan Spieth (+3500) and Justin Rose (+8000) are the only other past FedExCup winners in the first event of this year's FedExCup Playoffs. Spieth is looking for his first win since the 2022 RBC Heritage while Rose was a winner earlier this year at the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

TPC Southwind Course Preview

TPC Southwind is a 7,243-yard par-70 with two par-5s, four par-3s and 12 par-4s. Eight of the 12 par-4s are on the longer side between 445 and 505 yards, so scoring on these holes will be key this week.

Ron Prichard designed the course in 1988, and TPC Southwind features Champion Bermudagrass greens and 419 Bermudagrass rough at 2.5 inches. The greens will roll at a 12+ on the stimpmeter and are the fourth-smallest on Tour (4,300 square feet). This spring the course finished its conversion to zoysiagrass in the fairways, and the tees also feature zoysiagrass as well.

Overall, there are 75 bunkers at TPC Southwind, and water is in play on 11 of the 18 holes.

Historically, Strokes Gained: Approach has been the most highly correlated Strokes Gained metric to SG: Total at TPC Southwind. SG: Off the Tee is less correlated with SG: Total at TPC Southwind compared to the average PGA Tour course, while Driving Accuracy has been more closely correlated with SG: Total than Driving Distance. SG: Putting and SG: Around the Green have fluctuated around their normal correlations with SG: Total at TPC Southwind compared to the average PGA Tour course over the last three years.

FedEx St. Jude Championship Past Winners

Tony Finau, Jason Day and Matt Kuchar are the three past champions in the field for this week's FedEx St. Jude Championship, .
