Grant Thornton Invitational Preview

The PGA Tour and LPGA will combine this week at the 2023 Grant Thornton Invitational at Tiburón Golf Club. Sixteen two-player teams will compete over three rounds from Friday to Sunday with a scramble on Friday, foursomes (alternate shot) on Saturday and modified four-ball on Sunday.

This event was previously played under a different format as the QBE Shootout, which Sahith Theegala and Tom Hoge won last year. Both of them are in the field this week as Theegala teams up with rising LPGA star Rose Zhang (+1100) this week while Hoge pairs with Cheyenne Knight (+2200).

They are all looking up on the odds board to Nelly Korda and Tony Finau, who opened as the outright betting favorites on Monday at +600 on bet365. They have since shortened to +525 to win outright at bet365 as of Thursday morning. Korda played in this event last year with Denny McCarthy as they excelled and finished in a tie for fifth.

Only one other team, Ludvig Aberg and Madelene Sagström at +800, opened with odds shorter than 10-1 to win in Naples, Florida this week. As of Thursday morning, their odds have shortened to +575 as they continue to creep closer to becoming the outright betting favorites.

Like Korda, Lexi Thompson is also playing in this event for the second consecutive year after she and Maverick McNealy finished in a tie for 12th last year. Thompson, who nearly made a cut on the PGA Tour earlier this fall at the Shriners Children's Open, is partnering with Rickie Fowler this week, and they opened with the fourth-shortest outright odds at +1100. Their odds have drifted to +1300 as of Thursday.

Course Preview

Tiburón Golf Club hosts the 2023 Grant Thornton Invitational this week after hosting the QBE Shootout from 2001 to 2022. The course also serves as the host of the CME Group Tour Championship on the LPGA Tour, so most competitors in this field have played the course before.

All competitors will play Tiburón as a par-72, with LPGA golfers playing from 6,595 yards while PGA Tour golfers play from 7,382 yards. The fairways are generous at Tiburón as the average fairway widths in landing areas measure 50 yards.

Tiburón was designed by Greg Norman in 1998 on land that was formerly a tomato farm, and consequently, tomato plants can be found in native areas. The course features Bermudagrass throughout and does not have any rough as wayward drives will encounter Coquina shell waste bunkers and natural grasses.
