Coming off of his win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational over the weekend, Scottie Scheffler is the betting favorite at the Players this week at +575, with Rory McIlroy behind him at +1300.

2024 Players Championship Updated Odds

The PGA Tour heads to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida for The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass (PLAYERS Stadium Course) in the crown jewel of the PGA Tour schedule. This year marks the 50th playing of The Players Championship.

Scottie Scheffler, who won The Players Championship last year, enters off of a dominant five-shot win this past weekend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Unsurprisingly, the current FedExCup Points List leader opened as the outright betting favorite again this week at +600 odds at bet365 after winning at TPC Sawgrass by five shots last year. Scheffler has since drifted slightly to +625 odds as of Wednesday morning.

The No. 1 golfer in the world has played The Players Championship two other times before his win last season when he tied for 55th in 2022 and missed the cut in 2021. Scheffler also competed in the 2020 edition of this tournament which was canceled after the first round due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scheffler now has finished in the top 17 in all six of his starts on Tour in 2024, including four top-six finishes.

Rory McIlroy, who won The Players in 2019, had the second-shortest outright odds at open on bet365 at +1200 and has drifted to +1700. McIlroy entered Sunday four shots behind Scheffler at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but fired a final-round 76 to finish in a tie for 21st. So far in four starts on Tour in 2024, McIlroy is still yet to record a top-20 finish, although he did win and finish second in two different starts on the DP World Tour in January.

McIlroy has had an up-and-down history at TPC Sawgrass with the win and four other top-12 finishes. Overall, McIlroy has missed the cut in six of 13 appearances at The Players, including two of the last three years.

Like his Ryder Cup teammate McIlroy, Viktor Hovland also missed the cut at TPC Sawgrass in his tournament debut in 2021, but the Norwegian has recorded consecutive top-10 finishes since then with a T3 last year and a T9 in 2022. Hovland finished T36 at +2 this past weekend at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has not recorded a finish better the a tie for 19th this season in four starts on the PGA Tour. Hovland opened with +2400 outright odds at bet365 and has drifted to +2700.

Brice Garnett is in the field for The Players Championship at 600-1 odds thanks to his win this past weekend at the Puerto Rico Open in his first start on the PGA Tour this season. He defeated Erik Barnes on the fourth hole of a playoff with a birdie (as they played the 18th hole four straight times). It was Garnett's second win on Tour and first since the 2018 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship.

After losing his PGA Tour card last season by finishing 163rd in the FedEx Cup Points List, Garnett went to PGA Tour Q-School in December to try and finish in the top five to earn his card back. He finished 28th then and had made three starts in 2024: two missed cuts and a tie for 51st on the Korn Ferry Tour. Thanks to his win Sunday in Puerto Rico at 150-1 odds entering the week, the 40-year-old now has a two-year exemption and job security on the PGA Tour.

The 2021 winner of The Players Championship, Justin Thomas, opened with +2400 odds to win this week at TPC Sawgrass following a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational this past weekend. JT now has four top-12 finishes in five starts so far this season as he is still searching for his first win on Tour since the 2022 PGA Championship. Thomas has since shortened from +2400 at open to +2000 as of late Tuesday afternoon.

The other golfers in the field with outright odds shorter than 30-1 at bet365 on Wednesday morning include:

• Xander Schauffele (+2400)
• Max Homa (+2400)
• Jordan Spieth (+2700)

Some other notables in the field this week and their outright odds include Collin Morikawa (+3000), Will Zalatoris (+3200), Ludvig Åberg (+3200), Wyndham Clark (+4500) and Rickie Fowler (+16000).

2024 Players Championship Course Preview: TPC Sawgrass 

TPC Sawgrass (PLAYERS Stadium Course) is a 7,275-yard par-72 designed by Pete Dye in 1980 that features Poa Trivialis overseed (over dormant Bermudagrass) greens. Dye and Steve Wenzloff collaborated for a renovation in 2016.

The iconic 17th hole features an island green (which is technically a peninsula) and is typical of Dye designs where golfers must take on the trouble near the hole to be rewarded with a quality opportunity to putt for birdie. This is a positional golf course where players will need to have total control of their golf ball and navigate danger near the fast and firm greens.

The final three-hole stretch sets up one of the most exhilarating finishes in golf with risks and rewards: a short par-5 with water short right of the green, a short par-3 17th with water and a small pot bunker surrounding the green, and the dogleg left 18th with one of the toughest fairways to hit on Tour that hugs water on the left all the way up the green.

The course features some of the smaller putting surfaces on Tour with an average green size of 5,500 square feet. TPC Sawgrass has trouble looming at all times as water is in play on 17 holes (all but the eighth hole), and there are sand bunkers on all 18 holes. The course includes many of Dye's signature small pot bunkers.

Compared to the average golf course on the PGA Tour, there were an above-average amount of approaches at TPC Sawgrass in 2023 from 50-75 yards, 75-100 yards, 100-125 yards, 125-150 yards, 225-250 yards and 250+ yards. There were also below-average percentage of approaches from 150-175 yards, 175-200 and 200-225 yards. Consequently, golfers will need to be strong throughout their bags this week at TPC Sawgrass.
