The Sentry Preview

The PGA Tour kicks off its 2024 season with The Sentry, formerly known as the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Last year Jon Rahm trailed 54-hole-leader Collin Morikawa by nine strokes at one point in the final round as the Spaniard shot a 63 to win by two. Rahm won't be in the field at The Sentry to defend his title or play on the PGA Tour at all this season as he has taken his talents to LIV Golf.

Morikawa held a six-stroke lead over the field entering the final round last year and at one point led Rahm by nine strokes on Sunday, but Morikawa made his first three bogeys of the week on holes 14, 15 and 16 to shoot a back-nine 39 and finish two strokes behind Rahm in solo second. He opened this week at +1400 in a tie for the fourth-shortest outright odds before moving to +1500 on Monday afternoon then shortening to +1200 as of Thursday morning.

Scottie Scheffler is once again the outright betting favorite at bet365 at +55o odds this week after opening on Monday morning at +600. The Texas Longhorn was tied for second here last year after three rounds before eventually finishing T7. In his only start since the Tour Championship, Scheffler won the Hero World Challenge at the beginning of December.

Viktor Hovland has the second-shortest outright odds at +950 after opening at +800. Hovland won each of his last two official PGA Tour starts at the BMW Championship and Tour Championship in the FedExCup Playoffs in August. The Norwegian is making his fourth start at The Sentry, but he is still looking for his first top-15 finish at Kapalua.

Ludvig Aberg makes his tournament debut at The Sentry this week after opening with the third-shortest odds at +1200. As of Thursday morning, Aberg's odds have drifted to +1500.

The Texas Tech Red Raider enters with as much momentum as any golfer as he is fresh off of his first PGA Tour win at The RSM Classic, where only one golfer finished within six strokes of him (Mackenzie Hughes – four behind). He has notched eight consecutive top-14 finishes on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour combined since the Wyndham Championship, including his first DP World Tour win at the Omega European Masters in September.

Max Homa opened in a tie for the fourth-shortest outright odds at +1400 at bet365 as he has consistently been playing quality golf since the summer. He won the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the DP World Tour in South Africa in November and finished T7 at the Fortinet Championship in his only PGA Tour start since the playoffs.

The Cal Bear had his best finish in three starts at Kapalua last year with a tie for third place, and his odds have drifted slightly to +1500 as of Thursday morning.

Xander Schauffele, a past winner here in 2019, enters in a tie for the sixth-shortest outright odds this week at The Sentry at +1600. His odds have since moved slightly to +1300.

He was forced to withdraw from this event last year with an injury but had recorded three top-five finishes in his other five starts at Kapalua. Schauffele finished T38 at the Zozo Championship in Japan in his lone fall PGA Tour start since being the runner-up to Hovland at East Lake.

Patrick Cantlay was the other golfer tied with Schauffele at +1600 outright odds as of Monday morning at bet365, and he now sits at +1300. The UCLA product has not teed it up on Tour since the Tour Championship but was at the center of controversy with Hat Gate at the Ryder Cup. He has finished between fourth and 16th in all five of his starts at Kapalua.

Course Preview

The Plantation Course at Kapalua is a par-73 that measures more than 7,500 yards, but recent years have shown that this course can be scored on with the right conditions. If the wind cooperates, all five of the par-5s are reachable in two as par will be a disappointment on these holes.

In addition to five par-5s, which include the 18th hole, Kapalua has some of the widest fairways on the PGA Tour, and length off the tee can be mitigated on some holes where sloping fairways lead to collection areas.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua has featured a winning score of -25 or better each of the last three years, including Cameron Smith's PGA Tour scoring record at -34 in 2022.
