PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — It was a fun opening day at The Players Championship, with plenty of red numbers on the board. We should see similar conditions on Friday before it gets colder and windier and much tougher on the weekend.

For my favorite second-round matchup bets, I’m preying on a few guys to continue struggling and another to go super-low.

Rickie Fowler over Jordan Spieth by -0.5 (-145)

I hate to pick on Spieth after an opening-round 76 that served as a continuation of his season-long struggles, but it’s hard to see him bouncing back with a low one on Friday. As for Fowler, I do see that kind of number available in the calmer early conditions, which makes this a mouth-watering bet.

Tony Finau over Francesco Molinari (-110)

It’s a dangerous proposition to bet against last week’s winner, but Finau is another guy who’s primed to go low in the second round. I can see a 65-66 on tap to get him into serious contention entering the weekend.

Michael Kim over Cameron Champ (+125)

In my pre-second round matchup piece last week, I backed Champ after an opening 81 — a successful bet when he went much lower the next day.

Following an opening 78 here, though, I’m not nearly as bullish. Kim had two bad holes on Thursday — near-bookends with a double on hole No. 2 and another on 18 — but otherwise played nicely. I like him in a plus-money matchup here.
