Collin Whitchurch’s Diamondbacks vs Reds Preview
We have two southpaw starting pitchers against two offenses that struggle against left-handed pitching. The Diamondbacks (95 wRC+) are significantly better than the Reds (74 wRC+) in that department, but both offenses rank below the MLB average.
However, I’m looking at the Reds because of the starting pitching matchup and the situational spot.
Diamondbacks starting pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez looks cooked. He’s still missing bats, but his swinging-strike rate has dipped below 10%, and he allows too much hard contact to sustain that. Not to mention, he’s allowing a metric ton of fly balls, which is terrible news when you’re heading to the hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark.
Additionally, the Diamondbacks are in a letdown spot after scoring seven runs in the ninth inning on Thursday to beat the Braves – the emotional high from that wild game must’ve been intense. Throw in the travel, and I think the Snakes’ bats might be a tad slow on Friday.
Arizona’s bullpen is also shaky and overextended, and I think the Reds will have the nine-inning pitching advantage behind Nick Lodolo and a very well-rested relief unit — Cincinnati had an off-day on Thursday.
I’ll take the Reds ML at -120 or better.
