Diamondbacks Betting Preview: Perdomo, Suarez Power Playoff Push

The Diamondbacks swept the Cardinals coming out of the All-Star break. However, they were swept by the Astros in their last series to split their homestand.

Sitting five games out of the final NL Wildcard and sitting on several prized trade targets, the Diamondbacks made their first move last night, trading Josh Naylor to the Mariners in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects.

They are still sitting on the top available hitter on the market in third baseman Eugenio Suarez. Suarez ranks in the top 10 in the MLB in home runs (36), runs batted in (86), and OPS (.918). Eight of his past 10 hits have been home runs. Ranking in the 90th percentile among qualified players in hard-hit percentage and 91st in barrel rate, Suarez may leave the yard again against Mike Burrows.

He may drive in Geraldo Perdomo in the process. Perdomo has a hit in seven of his past eight at-bats. In the process, he has upped his average to .283 on the year to go along with 10 home runs and 72 RBI, which ranks 11th in the MLB.

Corbin Carroll enters Friday's game on a five-game hitting streak. In that span, he has four runs scored, three RBI, and six extra-base hits. Likely batting leadoff, Carroll will look to set the table for a Diamondbacks offense that remains potent even without Naylor.

The beneficiary of any run support on Friday will be right-handed Ryne Nelson.

However, the 27-year-old has not needed much of late. He has allowed one run or fewer in five of his past seven starts and has a 3.09 ERA in 11 starts this season. He tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings against Pittsburgh in a 5-0 Memorial Day victory.

Pirates Betting Preview: Pitching Questions Loom

Like the Diamondbacks, the Pirates are 3-3 out of the All-Star break, but they did so in opposite fashion. The White Sox swept them before pulling off a sweep of their own against the struggling Tigers. The Pirates scored 17 runs in the three victories over Detroit, which is a departure from their typical offensive output. They are last in the MLB in runs scored this season.

Spencer Horwitz and Bryan Reynolds were both key factors in the last series. Horwitz went 7-for-11 (.636) with a home run while driving in seven runs. He will enjoy the home cooking on Friday, as he is hitting .268 with a .799 OPS at PNC Park compared to .227 with a .546 OPS on the road.

Reynolds went 6-for-13 (.462) with two doubles and four RBI against the Tigers. He has a hit in seven of his past eight games, with three multi-hit games. To stay hot, he will have to crack Nelson, as he is 0-for-5 with a strikeout against him thus far.

Following Nelson's strong start against the Pirates, Pittsburgh was able to take the final two games of the series. They won the middle game of the series despite Burrows allowing five runs (four earned) in 3 1/3 innings. Burrows has a 4.70 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the year. He has yet to record a quality start in 10 tries this season as he typically works five innings or fewer.

Diamondbacks vs Pirates Prediction, Betting Analysis

Including his last two games against the Astros, Perdomo is 13-for-24 (.542) with three runs scored, three extra-base hits, seven RBI, and a 1.268 OPS since the All-Star break. He has recorded two or more hits + runs + runs batted in six times in his last seven games, averaging 3.6 per game in that span.

Although he went 0-for-2 against Burrows in May, he still finished with four HRRBI in that game. He may only face him again if Burrows has another short outing.

In addition, Carroll has recorded two hits + runs + RBI in five of his last nine games against the Pirates and in seven of his last 10 games overall.

Nelson struck out four batters in his most recent start against the Pirates. He also has fanned four batters in five of his past six starts, and the Pirates are seventh in strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers.

When you combine these legs, we nearly get +300 odds on Fanatics.

Pick: Geraldo Perdomo 2+ Hits + Runs + RBI (-115, Fanatics)
