Braves vs White Sox MLB Betting Preview, Picks

Editor's Note: This written best bet is a transcription from the latest episode of the Payoff Pitch podcast.

It's Grant Holmes against Brandon Eisert as an opener, and then Erick Fedde.

The White Sox have actually done a very good job of protecting Fedde this year. They are not really letting him see more than 18 hitters. In his last start against the Twins, he threw five shutout innings and came out after facing exactly 18 batters.

They are going to use an opener in front of him tonight to try to get away from the Braves' best hitters, like Ronald Acuña Jr. Even so, Fedde will probably still try to turn over the lineup twice.

When you look at all of his game logs, he is consistently facing 18, 19, or 21 hitters, meaning he generally comes out after two times through the order. Last time out was specifically the first time he faced exactly 18 hitters and got pulled—and again, he was throwing a shutout up to that point. So, they will be careful with him.

Braves vs White Sox Pick, Betting Analysis

I like the under here, but the real upside for the under is that these project as two of my best bullpens. Very surprisingly, the White Sox rank as a top-10 bullpen for me, and the Braves are my number two bullpen going forward.

Both pens are well-rested after an off day, so I am hoping both sides are going to be aggressive in terms of their bullpen usage tonight. The White Sox certainly should be, and the Braves hopefully will be.

As for Grant Holmes, he is typically much better at home than he is on the road. He is usually a guy I target against on the road, looking for either overs or opposing money lines. There is just no value in terms of either of those tonight.

Instead, I think this total simply got a little bit too high when it touched 9.5. I make it closer to 8.5. I certainly do not love either starting pitcher, but I am hoping that these quality bullpens can keep these teams in check in the later innings.

As long as Fedde does not completely implode, I like the under. The line has adjusted down, but I still like the Under 9.

Pick: Under 9 (-104; play to -120)
