Braves vs Padres MLB Betting Preview

Atlanta Braves Betting Preview

The Braves' offense ranks 10th this season, but fourth-worst in the past month. The losses of Ronald Acuna Jr. and Drake Baldwin shook this lineup of their only true table-setters.

While there is still plenty of talent between Matt Olson, Austin Riley, Michael Harris II, and Ozzie Albies, their production is inconsistent as a group, especially from Riley.

Austin Riley may never again reach the highs of his 2021-2024 run. He has had an extremely concerning stretch since 2025, with a .243/.303/.399 slash-line, 28.7% K rate, and 95 wrC+ in this span.

Riley has hit 24 home runs in these 759 plate appearances. He had 19 in 469 PA just two seasons ago!

Harris II and Albies' bounce-back seasons are at least encouraging, along with Baldwin's leap this season. The Braves were able to achieve great heights in 2021 without Acuna Jr, but that will not be the case this season. He remains out for a "while", according to manager Walt Weiss.

Even when Acuna Jr. is back, they may need a trade deadline acquisition to provide an added spark. This is especially true for the rotation, but at least there are rumors of interest in Tigers' ace Tarik Skubal.

Coincidentally, the Padres' offense is just below the Braves' in this past month of games. San Diego has had moments from their core of Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Jackson Merrill, but like the Braves, they are out of sync.

Tatis Jr.'s power outage is regularly noted by the media, and for good reason. He has just two HR all season, but at least both have come in the past month.

He is slashing .322/.355/.471 since his first HR on May 30, with a 133 wRC+. There is life in Tatis Jr.'s bat, albeit dimmer than usual.

Machado is waking up as well. He has hit 8 of his 14 HR this season between May 19 and June 22. However, it is over the past two weeks that he has been shining.

Machado is slashing .277/.340/.617 since June 9, with three HR and a 160 wRC+. This is long overdue for the highly paid star, especially considering his season-long .185 average and 81 wRC+.

The Padres desperately need an addition on offense, specifically a left-handed power bat to fortify the lineup in the heart of the order.

Braves vs Padres Pick, Betting Analysis

J.R. Ritchie vs. Griffin Canning is not exactly a pitcher's duel. Both SPs are back-end starters at best this season. Ritchie is more talented and has an ERA two runs lower, but his peripheral stats are just as poor as Canning's.

Unsurprisingly, Canning is better at home in Petco Park's favorable conditions for pitching. Canning has a quality 16.3% K-BB and 3.48 xFIP in San Diego. However, he significantly struggles with left-handed pitching.

All eight of Canning's home runs allowed this season have come against lefties. Furthermore, the Braves' lineup starts six left-handed hitters against an RHP. While they are weaker without franchise cornerstone Ronald Acuna Jr., the return of star catcher Drake Baldwin this week is a big boost to their sputtering offense.

Braves SP J.R. Ritchie is a better pitcher on the road this season, but he also struggles against left-handed hitters. Luckily, the Padres' only quality lefties are Jackson Merrill and Gavin Sheets. They can start up to four lefties in the lineup, but typically start three.

Both offenses are bottom-five in the past 30 days by wRC+, but both should be able to crack the opposing starter today.

Also, the Braves' high-leverage arms are much fresher than the Padres'. None of Raisel Iglesias, Robert Suarez, or Dylan Lee has pitched in the past two days. Each of Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, and Kyle Hart has pitched in two of the past three games.

If Ritchie can provide a quality five or six innings today, the Braves should handle business with ease.

Pick: Atlanta Braves Moneyline (-108)
