Red Sox vs Dodgers MLB Betting Preview

Boston Red Sox Betting Preview

The Red Sox are on a nice little run right now, and now they'll have to put their money where their mouth is as they take on the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The offense has been a bit suppressed of late, leading to some close games, but on the whole they still rank seventh in wRC+ over the last two weeks with a solid .184 Isolated Power.

They may not need to do much with the Dodgers throwing a bullpen game against mighty Ranger Suarez. The ever-reliable lefty has been the best version of himself this season, posting a career-high 26.3% strikeout rate while maintaining some friendly numbers on contact. The .239 Expected Batting Average is right at his career average, and despite gearing toward more contact in the air this year, he's maintained a great .338 Expected Slugging — 69 points better than the league norm.

Suarez has allowed just five home runs all year — a stat that is crazy given his poor 19.6% Pull Air% and his 59.2% rate of contact through the air, but it's a bit easier to understand when you see that most of the balls that have avoided hitting the infield dirt have been line drives, not fly balls. That is crucial, as this Boston infield has been one of the worst in baseball for years — and even with some improvements, it still ranks 18th in Outs Above Average. By contrast, the outfield is the second-best in baseball.

Luckily for Suarez, the Dodgers own the second-lowest ground-ball rate in baseball over the last two weeks and the third-lowest for the year. They should play right into his hands.

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

I'm not really sure what the Dodgers are planning on doing on Friday because they've declared a bullpen game despite having zero long relievers in the bullpen. Edgardo Henriquez will start and is capable of going multiple innings, and perhaps Will Klein can follow for a couple as well. That still leaves more than half of the game uncovered if those guys are able to max out their frames, and both Edwin Diaz and Tanner Scott would figure to be unavailable since they've worked back-to-back days.

It could be that the Dodgers are stretching out Klein, who's on four days' rest, but he's struggled lately and is all but certainly taking a few games to reset. He's a huge unknown in this game, at any rate, and we also know at some point Justin Wrobleski will be coming out of the bullpen. It wouldn't really make much sense to do it here considering he's on three days' rest, but Blake Snell is due back in the rotation next week, and with Eric Lauer and Roki Sasaki having just pitched, there's really no other option.

Of course, the Dodgers are 69-40, so they won't be doing anything to tax their pitchers. Unfortunately, this logic works against Wrobleski pitching in any capacity, but it also works against using your entire bullpen, which is already without two guys. I just don't really know how they cover nine innings. I guess Wrobleski could come in and throw 40 pitches on three days' rest and live to tell the tale.

At any rate, this leaves us without a clue as to how this game is going to go for the Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani's continued presence on the active roster, and not on the injured list, has really handcuffed this team.

Red Sox vs Dodgers Pick, Betting Analysis

I think we've officially jumped the shark with the Dodgers. I cannot fathom how a team without a pitcher to cover more than two innings, and an offense which is going through its roughest stretch of the season without its best hitter, is a favorite in this game. Boston's got the hotter offense, they have a pitcher who's been on fire and will attack the leftiness of this L.A. lineup, and above all else, they simply have more arms to use.

Boston's power numbers are better than L.A.'s, and somehow its strikeout rate is even better at 23%. I expect Suarez to feast on a currently undisciplined Dodgers offense amid his strong strikeout season, and with his ability to keep the ball in the yard, I don't see the home favorites finding the timely homers they often lean on for close victories. I don't know what more there is to say here. Boston should be favored.
