Tigers vs Guardians Pick, Betting Analysis
Tarik Skubal makes his triumphant return to the mound for the Tigers on Saturday.
He hasn’t made a start since late April, but he did predictably carve up Cincinnati’s High-A team in his rehab start (five shutout innings with six strikeouts).
There are plenty of rumors floating around about Detroit’s intentions with Skubal as the trade deadline approaches. If he is eventually moved, we should appreciate his final starts in a Tiger uniform before he’s inevitably traded to the Dodgers.
While the Guardians are an above-average offense (projected 104 wRC+ against left-handed pitching), Skubal is the two-time defending Cy Young winner who should handle his divisional rival with ease. For what it’s worth, Skubal tossed 28 innings of two-run ball with 40 strikeouts in four starts against Cleveland last season.
On the other side, I’m not enthralled with Joey Cantillo, who is likely a below-average pitcher — his advanced pitching model metrics are a mess (90 Pitching+, 5.28 botERA). There’s a shot he gets ripped apart by Detroit’s offense, which projects to record a 112 wRC+ against right-handed pitching, especially with the 84-degree temperatures and eight-MPH winds blowing out to right field.
That said, the Guardians have a top-10 bullpen and an above-average defense, which will provide Cantillo with plenty of support.
Regardless, behind Skubal and two fully-rested bullpens fully rested in this matchup, Zerillo projects only 7.5 runs for this matchup.
So, I think there’s a bit of value if you can get Under 8 with not too much juice.
Pick: Under 8 (-115 or Better)
