Royals vs Guardians MLB Preview

There was once a time when I believed Tanner Bibee would be the Ace of this Guardians staff. Sadly, that never materialized — instead, future AL Cy Young winner Gavin Williams is that guy.

Bibee is too inconsistent. He’s poor at pitching to contact, and he’s missing fewer bats each year. He has nice secondary stuff out of the zone, but he doesn’t throw enough strikes in the zone.

The thing about Michael Wacha is that his underlying indicators will always show a 4.50 FIP pitcher. But he will always overperform because of his changeup — he’s overperformed his earned run indicators in five straight seasons (3.46 ERA, 4.31 xFIP during that stretch).

That changeup is really good, reaching a career-high 130 Stuff+ rating this year. And it really helps him force weak contact and keep up a great batted-ball profile, which will help his overall production despite his inability to force whiffs or strikeouts.

That changeup is a weapon against left-handed hitters. He’s thrown it 480 times to Southpaws this season, and it’s allowed a .193 wOBA. The expected stats are in line with that mark, including a .215 xwOBA and .263 xSLG allowed.

That’s massive today, given the Guardians might have seven lefties in the lineup tonight (if all the switch hitters play and bat from the Southpaw side).

The Royals offense has been on a heater (111 wRC+ over the past month, fourth in MLB). Bobby Witt Jr. and Jac Caglianone rank among the top-five players in fWAR during the month of August.

The Guardians have the better bullpen, but the Royals are the better base-running team, and these are similar defensive teams.

I love the Royals today at prices below 50c. They should be favored.
