Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview: Rodriguez Needs To Shake Rust Off

Once upon a time, Grayson Rodriguez had climbed to the best pitching prospect in baseball and was widely viewed as a future ace in this league. He showed the occasional flash, but never lived up to the hype after battling injuries and inconsistency. Baltimore eventually gave up on him and shipped him off to the Angels this offseason.

After suffering another injury during spring training, Rodriguez finally made his debut in Anaheim on May 17, and his first two outings have been a disaster. Rogriguez has a 10.61 through two starts, allowing seven runs and four runs. Now this is his first MLB action in nearly two years, so it might take a while to shake the rust off.

Luckily, Mike Trout did not need long to return to form. Trout came out of the gates hot and has continued to be the anchor in this lineup. Shortstop Zach Neto is one of the most underrated players in the game, and Jo Adell has shown the ability to get hot at the plate.

After that, the lineup drops off a cliff, though. Jorge Soler and Logan O’Hoppe have been super disappointing in the middle of this lineup. The Angels have some decent pop, but they strike out more than any team in the league and do not get on base consistently enough.

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview: Inconsistent Flaherty Far From His Best

I find Jack Flaherty to be such an interesting pitcher. A former top 100 prospect, Flaherty posted a top-four Cy Young Award finish in 2019 and looked like he was going to be a dominant ace for a long time. Then he battled injuries and posted up-and-down seasons, looking dominant for stretches and getting crushed for others.

In his final few years in St. Louis, his K/9 rate had dropped into the eighths. Then it has remained over 10.5 K/9 over the last three seasons in Detroit. His strikeout numbers are still there this season, but everything else has plummeted. Flaherty has a 5.94 ERA and ranks in the bottom 15% of the league in walks and hard-hit rate.

Speaking of plummeting, this Tigers offense has fallen off a cliff this season. Detroit ranks in the bottom five in scoring, home runs, and team OPS. The Tigers have the lowest team OPS in the American League. They strike out too much and struggle to drive in runners consistently.

Rookie Kevin McGonigle and outfielder Riley Greene are the only two hitters in this lineup with an OPS over .770. Power bats Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter have both been horrible and have become big holes in this lineup where the Tigers need it most.

Angels vs Tigers Pick, Betting Analysis

Both of these teams sit near the bottom of the American League standings and have been very disappointing. It was a little more expected for the Angels than Detroit, but both have underachieved to this point, and offensive woes have been a big reason why.

Detroit has been the worst offense in the American League over the last two weeks. The Tigers are last in scoring, team average, and team OPS over that stretch. They have more strikeouts than any team and have been horrendous with runners in scoring position.

While the Angels have been nothing to write home about, they have at least been a little better at the plate. If both teams have essentially been NBA Jam-style two-man teams this season, I’ll take Trout and Neto over Greene and McGonigle.

As much as Rodriguez looked awful in his first two starts back, it was always going to take him some time to shake the rust off after nearly two years. Hey, even his four-run outing was a big improvement on the seven he allowed in the start prior.

Rodriguez averaged 96.3 miles per hour on his fastball, which is back to where he was prior to the injury, and his slider generated a 34.8% whiff rate. His biggest issue was command. His 13% walk rate so far this season is nearly double what he was posting in Baltimore.

There is always a chance Rodriguez just stinks now and gets shelled for the third time, but we know the talent was in there at one point. I’ll take my chances against this Tigers offense with how they have been hitting the ball recently.

We know what Flaherty is going to be at this point in his career. He has a 0-6 record, and Detroit is 2-9 in his 11 starts. Take the underdog Angels and hope G-Rod can shake off the rust here and that third time’s the charm.

Pick: Angels ML (+105 or Better)
