Angels vs Giants MLB Betting Preview
The Angels are hoping to resurrect the once-promising career of Grayson Rodriguez, and around a few positive starts, there's been a lot of chaos. The right-hander surrendered six runs on seven hits and a walk last time out against the Tigers, and he struck out just three over four innings.
Rodriguez has now struck out just four across his last three outings, and even though he hasn't pitched particularly well this season, he was at least racking up some punchouts when he first came back.
The fastball velocity has come back, and the spin has come back too. Rodriguez is simply missing far too often, throwing significantly more in the heart of the zone as opposed to in the upper third. While he's thrown the fastball for more strikes, which has hurt, he's also thrown his changeup in the zone just 38.2% of the time, down 13 points from 2024.
That's been a contributing factor to his poor 10.1% walk rate, and hitters are chasing at one of the lowest rates in baseball, which should tell you that there's nothing good coming from Rodriguez's missing consistently with the delivery.
It would seem that if Rodriguez can just find some command, then he'd be on his way to figuring things out. Right now, there's no reason for hitters to chase out of the zone with his fastball catching so much of the plate, but if he can establish his secondary pitch, he could find a turnaround in a hurry.
I'd also like to note, quickly, that Rodriguez has induced an insane 69.2% rate of contact through the air — almost 14 points higher than the league average. While that doesn't normally fly in Anaheim, it could work to his benefit in a larger park.
On the other side, the always-consistent Logan Webb has been anything but this season. He had his fair share of poor outings earlier in the year, and now the wheels have come off this month as he's struggled to an 8.10 ERA in July.
He's coming off a positive step forward, allowing three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings in Seattle, which canceled out his rough start in Colorado. He's now allowed four home runs in his last three outings, and his issues with walks have seemed to come back, with seven coming in his last four.
Webb's still a heavy ground-ball pitcher, and after his huge strikeout surge in 2025, he's returned to getting outs via contact. He's more or less been the same guy by the expected numbers, save for a slight jump in Expected Batting Average, but the xSLG is still low on account of all the ground balls, so we're not too concerned there.
The good news for Webb is that not only do the Angels hit worse versus ground-ball pitchers, but they're 21st in wRC+ over the last two weeks despite hitting .244. A brutal 25.5% strikeout rate continues to kill this team, and its 8.6% walk rate doesn't make up for it nearly enough. Above all, however, L.A.'s .089 Isolated Power should help Webb limit the damage here.

Angels vs Giants Pick, Betting Analysis
The Giants love to hit fly-ballers, ranking first in OPS against these types, and they're also just outside the top 10 in xBA and xSLG to fastballs from righties. It would seem, then, that this is a solid matchup to play the home team — but there are a few things that give me pause here.
The first is that San Francisco loves to swing the bat, doing so at the seventh-highest clip in the league. This has led to the lowest walk rate in baseball, and while the strikeouts haven't been a huge issue, they've come a bit more frequently over the last two weeks.
In that time, San Francisco's ISO is a measly .135, and despite hitting .261, it is even lower than L.A.'s in wRC+ during this time. The Giants will likely be too impatient to really find the very hittable fastball they are looking for, and this could help Rodriguez open up his secondaries.
Of course, this once uber-prospect could find his command, and if he does, then there's not a whole lot that should be holding him back. I'd expect a bit more success on contact for Rodriguez here, particularly in a friendly park, but I wouldn't expect his offense to conquer Webb given their lack of discipline and power.
Pick: Under 8.5 (-110)
