Dodgers vs Cubs MLB Betting Preview
It's Skubal day! The reigning Cy Young winner will make his debut in Dodger blue and go up against a pretty tough offense.
The Cubs just took lefty Justin Wrobleski deep four times yesterday, and they do have awesome recent numbers against left-handed pitching. There are also some winds blowing out to left field, which has a chance to benefit the right-handed pull hitters.
Skubal is a different kind of guy, though. He has a 34% K% and 3.8% BB% since coming back from the injury. His numbers are even better than last year when he took home the trophy. He won't be winning the award this year with the missed time and now with the league change, but he certainly has his sights on a bigger trophy that comes in late October.
PROJECTION: 6 IP, 4.7 H, 2.1 ER, 6.7 K, 1.4 BB
I don't see much value in Skubal's lines. My projection is below the 7.5 K (-124)line, but I don't like to bet against these aces who have so much upside in that regard.
The Cubs remade their rotation yesterday, adding three big-time starting pitchers via trade. But we'll have to wait to see the new guys, as Javier Assad is going to take the hill for this one.
Assad is a soft-tossing righty with a 3.75 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, 17% K%, and 6.4% BB%. His best quality is keeping the ball off the barrel of the bat with good command.
He's allowed just a 9% Air Pull% this year and a decent .327 xwOBA. That's painting a prettier picture than the reality, though, because he has still given up 12 homers in 69.2 innings (1.55 HR/9).
He's been better at striking out lefties (19% K% to LHB vs. 14% to RHB), which probably has to do with his confidence in throwing the curveball and changeup to those hitters. He does not use either pitch to righties.
The splits are strange. He gets more strikeouts against lefties, but those are the matchups where he gives up most of the damage. He gets a 50% GB% against RHB but way lower (40%) to lefties. So the lefties on the Dodgers lineup look pretty nice if you're hunting for some homer bets.

Dodgers vs Cubs Pick, Betting Analysis
I don't see much value in Skubal lines. I'll just sit back and watch how it goes in his first start with the Dodgers. It seems like 90% of the country will be rooting against them viciously the rest of the way home.
It seems like a death spot for Javier Assad, and he must know his days in the rotation are coming to an end with Gausman, Garrett, and Holmes entering the fold. It could be a shorter outing for Assad.
The Cubs got a little bit of bullpen help yesterday, but it's still not a great group of pitchers, so I like the Dodgers to come out swinging and do some damage in this spot.
My favorite bet on their side is Kyle Tucker, the lefty in the good matchup for power with Assad, and if you want the narrative of him returning to Wrigley – you can have that too.
Picks: Kyle Tucker 2+ H+R+RBI (-118), Dodgers Over 5.5 Total Runs (+105)
