Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview: Concerning Signs for May

It's been a difficult first season back from injury for Dustin May, and things don't exactly seem to be getting any better.

The right-hander is coming off his most encouraging start of the season, where he lasted seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk with nine punchouts, but it came against the Chicago White Sox.

Prior to that, he ran a .281 Expected Batting Average and .481 Expected Slugging in March, and the latter has been a particular issue for the righty all season long — even in his last outing, where he allowed a homer for a third straight outing.

May has now yielded six homers, eight doubles and two triples across his last six, accounting for 16 of the 33 hits against him. He's also seen his walk rate rise above 9% with a dip in strikeouts — up until last week — so the issues on contact are really coming to life.

As a ground-ball pitcher, May also won't be able to take advantage of the park upgrade on Friday in San Francisco, and he's been somewhat slighted by his infield, which ranks around the middle of the league in Outs Above Average this year and has begun July in the 23rd spot.

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview: More Ks, Walks for Webb

Speaking of ground-ball pitchers, they don't come as extreme as Logan Webb these days. The Giants right-hander is coming off a stellar June, when he posted a 2.23 ERA. With his infield ranking fifth in OAA, it's easy to see why that may be.

His xBA has remained more or less level with the league average throughout the season, but it's been the xSLG department where he's truly prevented his opponents from getting to him. Though he did allow the Athletics to drive the ball in his last turn through the rotation, he had to pitch in a much more difficult environment in Sacramento. Even then, he made it through without allowing a homer for a third time in four outings.

Webb has been struggling with control, as his walk rate has been inching up into a problematic area over the last month or so.

He's now walked 10 in his last five starts — something we rarely see the righty do — but that's likely a product of the incredible gains he's made in the strikeout department. He's punching hitters out at a 27.2% clip, which is bordering on elite, and he did well last month to maintain his excellence in that area.

Dodgers vs Giants Prediction, Pick

The Dodgers may be an elite offense on paper, but they've hit a considerable snag over the last month or so. Zooming in on the last two weeks, they're hitting just .205 with an Isolated Power of .138, and while they have continued to walk at a decent clip, they've now struck out in over 25% of plate appearances during that time.

The Dodgers have indeed been better against ground-ball pitchers this year — something that's stood true over the last few seasons, but they were unable to solve Webb earlier in the year, and the way they're hitting right now, it would seem even more difficult.

San Francisco, on the other hand, ranks eighth in OPS to ground-ballers as opposed to 28th against fly-ballers, making this matchup with May a juicy one.

It makes perfect sense given the Giants' issues with making consistent contact this year. With May's strikeout rate sitting in a poor spot, you'd have to believe in this offense — which has cooled but still stands ahead of L.A.'s over the last 14 days.

There's plenty to like about Webb in this matchup — particularly given the Dodgers' power outage and lack of contact.

The righty has looked like a legitimate strikeout arm with just some slight issues with power, but his home park — and his excellent defense — should combine with the recent trends to deliver him a solid start.

There's very little to like about May, and he'll have to hope his defense turns things around in a hurry and that San Francisco comes out flat at the plate. We don't bet on luck; we bet on the numbers, which means the home favorites are the way to go.

Pick: Giants ML (-130, BetMGM)
