Twins vs Athletics Pick, Betting Analysis
Editor's Note: This written pick is a transcription from today's episode of the Payoff Pitch Podcast.
I'm locking in Over 10.5 (up to -120) or Over 11 at even money between the Twins and the Athletics.
Betting on this current version of the A's offense to score runs is asking for a lot—I don't project them much differently than I project the Nationals' current lineup, as there simply are not too many above-average major league hitters on this team. However, the conditions in Sacramento heavily favor run production tonight. We have 87-degree weather with winds blowing out to center field at 10 mph.
Sutter Health Park has been playing as an extreme hitter's park this season—30% above the major league average, which puts it right on par with Coors Field. While Sutter Health Park played 17% above average last year, the normalized summer heat in Sacramento this season has caused scoring to explode in this environment.
The Twins project as a top-five offense against left-handed pitching, and Springs' profile is a complete disaster right now. Over his last five starts, he has a negative 5% K-BB rate—walking more batters than he strikes out—while allowing over 2.3 home runs per nine innings and throwing balls over 43% of the time. He is either walking you or getting barreled up in the middle of the zone.
Zebby Matthews has pitched better of late, but he still carries a near 12% barrel rate on the season and allows plenty of fly balls. The A's should be able to lift the ball enough to put him in trouble.
The Twins' bullpen isn't one I love, and once the A's fall behind, you can expect their worst relievers to come in behind Springs and continue giving away runs. Additionally, late in the season, high-total games carry extra potential over value from position players coming in to pitch during potential blowouts.
I make this total about 11.25 for tonight, making Over 10.5 (up to -120) or Over 11 at even money my best bet.
Pick: Over 10.5 (Play Up to -120)
