Twins vs Mariners MLB Betting Preview
The Twins remain in the AL Central race and have already added to the roster via a trade for Mets lefty reliever A.J. Minter.
Minnesota will send a southpaw to the mound in rookie Connor Prielipp. I'm buying stock in Prielipp, whose 4.73 ERA may not jump off the page, but his 4.03 xERA and 3.73 FIP give me optimism for a late-season surge.
Prielipp has a deceptive motion and throws 95-98 on his four-seamer. That leads to a strong 9.46 K/9 in his rookie campaign. He has the ideal pitch mix for a young starter, featuring a slider, changeup, sinker and curveball.
Now, let's flip to the lineup, which carried the Twins at various times this year. The bad news for the Twins' playoff chances is that Byron Buxton is back on the injured list with a hip injury. With Buxton in the lineup, the Twins average 4.47 runs per game in 78 games; without him, the number dips to 4.25.
Buxton leads the Twins with a 136 wRC+, since Ryan Jeffers, who has a 163 wRC+, lacks the at-bats to be a qualified hitter. The next-best hitters are Kody Clemens (116 wRC+) and Trevor Larnach (133 wRC+). Both are solid players, but Minnesota is bereft of star power sans Buxton.
In July, the Twins ranked 19th in MLB with a 94 wRC+. They hit just 20 homers in the month (28th). At least they had a solid plate approach, walking 9% of the time and punching out just 21%.
The Mariners will task Logan Gilbert with the start on Saturday. The towering righty has emerged as one of the most consistent starters in the league who are just below the "star" tier. He boasts a 3.44 ERA, a 3.63 xERA and a 3.30 FIP.
Gilbert is striking out fewer hitters than last year. He punched out a career-high 11.8 K/9 last year and is down to 9.5 this year, but he's giving the Mariners more innings as a result. I'm sure Seattle is more than okay with that trade-off. Don't get it twisted, Gilbert is still a punchout artist, ranking in the 77th percentile or better in K%, chase rate and whiff rate.
The bats have gone cold in Seattle. The Mariners finished July with a 93 wRC+, putting them 22nd. As usual, the lineup goes as Julio Rodriguez goes, and he had a 71 wRC+ in 13 games. Factor in the rough year for Josh Naylor and Cal Raleigh, and this Seattle lineup is fairly mediocre.
Credit to Randy Arozarena, Cole Young and Dominic Canzone, who each posted a wRC+ better than 115 in July, led by Arozarena's 158. This matchup could be tough on Young, who struggles versus lefties. Meanwhile, Canzone has just 38 ABs against lefties but is running an OPS over 1.000 against them. If that pair can do some damage against Prielipp, that would be a huge boost for Seattle.

Twins vs Mariners Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm rolling with the under here. The under is 26-24-3 in Seattle home games, and it's known as a pretty extreme pitcher's park. In a matchup featuring a monster like Gilbert and a high-upside arm in Prielipp, it should lead to a lot of trips back to the dugout and a low-scoring game.
Pick: Under 8 (Play to 7.5)
