On Wednesday, we travel to Detroit to take an NRFI between two American League Central teams: the Guardians and Tigers.

As the league's best NRFI pitcher, Shane Bieber shouldn't need an introduction. The Cleveland starter is now 39-5 to the NRFI since 2020, sitting at 9-0 in 2022.

When facing hitters the first time through the order they're hitting just .171.

Bieber has impressively owned all his matchups against the Tigers:

  • Javier Baez: 0-for-6
  • Miguel Cabrera: 4-for-21
  • Jeimer Candelario: 4-for-27
  • Willi Castro: 3-for-16

When on the road against the Tigers since 2020, Bieber has gone 4-1 to the NRFI. In the last week, Candelario, Baez and lead-off hitter Robbie Grossman have all hit well below .200.

On the other side, we have veteran Michael Pineda. The 33-year-old has been a proficient pitcher most of his career, but he has been surprisingly even more proficient in the first inning.

Across two teams since 2020, Pineda holds an impressive 24-8 NRFI record. This includes his perfect 6-0 NRFI record in 2022. When facing hitters the first time through the lineup, he's holding them to an outstanding .170 average.

His best matchup today is against Franmil Reyes, who Pineda has held hitless in his career. There's a number of Guardians slumping this week, creating a significant NRFI opportunity:

  • Myles Straw: 2-for-21
  • Jose Ramirez: 5-for-26
  • Owen Miller: 4-for-22

With 21 plate appearances in the first inning since July began, the Guardians are hitting just .158 with three hits.

With NRFI Hall-of-Famer Bieber and the 6-0 NRFI veteran Pineda on the mound, bet on a collective six up, six down first inning.

As always, six outs to glory…
