Today, we venture to Petco Park to uncover value in the No Runs First Inning (NRFI) market as two National League juggernauts clash.

Leading the charge for the San Diego Padres is left-handed pitcher Blake Snell. Last season, Snell boasted an impressive 21-3 NRFI record, including a remarkable 13-2 home NRFI mark. When facing batters for the first time in the lineup, Snell demonstrated exceptional prowess, allowing only 32 hits in 196 at-bats for a .163 average.

Despite the formidable bats in the Braves' lineup, Snell has managed solid numbers against key hitters such as Ronald Acuña Jr. (2-for-5), Ozzie Albies (1-for-5) and Matt Olson (1-for-8).

Though Snell recently suffered a defeat against the Braves in Atlanta, his historical performance since 2021 against the same team within a month has been outstanding, as evidenced by a 26-1 NRFI record. Moreover, in the first 55 games of each season, Snell has a 24-3 NRFI record at home.

Despite his recent struggles, I expect Snell to revert to his previous dominance in the NRFI market.

On the opposing side for the Braves, right-handed pitcher Spencer Strider takes the mound.

Last season, Strider was nothing short of extraordinary in the first inning, posting an 18-2 NRFI record. When facing batters for the first time through the order this season, he has allowed only four hits in 25 at-bats, resulting in a .160 average.

Strider has maintained control against the Padres' heavy hitters, limiting Manny Machado (1-for-5), Nelson Cruz (0-for-4), Juan Soto (1-for-6) and Xander Bogaerts (0-for-2).

So far in 2023, the Padres rank 27th in baseball in first-inning hard-hit percentage at 24.6%, indicating that their contact in the opening frame is often less than impactful.

The NRFI for this matchup is currently priced at -120 at BetMGM.

As always, six outs to glory…
