Nick Galaida's Astros vs Brewers Best Bet: Value on Valdez
By Nick Galaida
Framber Valdez was forced from his last start after only five innings as he allowed four earned runs and nine baserunners in an ineffective showing against the White Sox. Still, he averaged a reasonably efficient 3.8 pitches per batter faced in that game. Over the past month (a span of 29 innings), Valdez has been one of the more efficient pitchers in baseball, averaging 3.7 pitches per batter faced.
Today, he draws a favorable matchup against the Brewers — an offense that has a 70 wRC+ against southpaws (ranking 21st) during the past two weeks. The Brewers have one of the more patient lineups in baseball, but Valdez does a good job of working ahead in the count, which should allow him to remain efficient. This is good value for a talented pitcher coming off of an underwhelming outing.
Pick: Framber Valdez Over 17.5 Outs (-125)
Brit Devine's Astros vs Brewers Best Bet: Wrong Team Favored?
By Brit Devine
I think the books have the wrong team favored.
Astros' starter Framber Valdez has been good this season, but not up to his usual level and has seen regression, compared to last season, in most areas that matter for a pitcher. He's a step above Brewers' starter Quinn Priester in most matchups, but with Yordan Alvarez out of the lineup and the Astros forced to run out a nearly full lineup of righties, Priester starts to look much better, as his struggles have typically come against lefties, which the Astros simply don't have right now.
The Brewers have the better offense by a decent margin, which should more than make up for the name value of Valdez.
I would have this game set to at least a pick'em, but with a plus-money line being hung on the Brewers, I'm going to back them for two units. Houston's lineup, in its current form, looks rather weak.
Pick: Brewers (+110)
Dead President Picks' Mariners vs Athletics Best Bet: Bet the Road Favorite
The Seattle Mariners (21-14) and Athletics (20-17) will clash at Sutter Health Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mariners, led by catcher Cal Raleigh and his 12 homers, will hand the ball to right-hander Bryan Woo (4-1, 2.58 ERA) today. Meanwhile, the Athletics have been one of the best surprises in baseball early this season and will give 25-year-old Gunnar Hoglund (1-0, 1.50 ERA) the start.
