Three players I have my eye on today are Hunter Dobbins, Tyler Soderstrom, and MacKenzie Gore.
Let's dive into my MLB player props for Monday, August 10.
MLB Player Props Today
- Hunter Dobbins Over 3.5 Strikeouts
- MacKenzie Gore Over 6.5 Strikeouts
- Tyler Soderstrom Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + Runs Batted In
Phillies vs Cardinals Prop
I would not consider Dobbins to be a strikeout artist. His career-high in 21 starts is seven strikeouts and this season he is in the 40th percentile in strikeout rate. However, lately that has been enough.
Dobbins has recorded four strikeouts in all eight of his appearances this season. He has had exactly four punchouts in five of those outings and is averaging 4.5 per game. Tonight, he faces a Phillies lineup that is seventh in strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers.
The Phillies did add Luis Arraez recently and he is one of the league's toughest hitters to strike out. However, there is still swing-and-miss throughout the lineup and this will be their first look at Dobbins. With the line at 3.5, we only need four from him tonight and that is very appealing at plus odds. It also helps that Dobbins has completed five innings in each of his last four outings.
Pick: Hunter Dobbins Over 3.5 Strikeouts
Rangers vs Angels Prop
Gore has faced the Angels twice this season, going six innings and allowing one hit and run in the first outing and allowing nine hits and seven runs while working five innings in the latter. The two starts highlight the frustrating inconsistency of Gore who has a 4.55 ERA this season and 4.26 ERA for his career despite tremendous stuff. However, in both outings, Gore still found his way to seven strikeouts.
He has recorded over 180 strikeouts in two straight seasons and is well way on his way to a third with 140 in 128 and 2/3 innings this season. He ranks in the 70th percentile with a 25.6% strikeout rate and gets a great matchup tonight against the Angels. Despite a right-handed-heavy lineup, the Angels lead the MLB in strikeout rate against left-handed pitchers.
Gore has already taken advantage of the matchup twice in the strikeout department, which makes sense because he has reverse splits. He has a 27.5% strikeout rate and has held them to a .669 OPS. He has struck out Zach Neto, Oswald Peraza, Jose Siri, and Mike Trout at least twice and one from each of them tonight will put him well on his way to the seven we need to cash.
Pick: MacKenzie Gore Over 6.5 Strikeouts
Rays vs Athletics Prop
This season has not gone the way the Athletics expected, but over the weekend they accomplished what seems to be impossible of late: take a series from the Boston Red Sox. Soderstrom played a big part in it with two home runs, a triple, and three runs batted in over the weekend. In the process, he extended his hitting streak to eight games, which he will look to push to nine back home.
He will face Freddy Peralta, whose nightmare season before his pending free agency continued in his first start with the Rays. He allowed seven runs on nine hits in 3 and 2/3 innings while striking out three against the Rockies. It pushed his ERA to 5.37 with a 1.52 WHIP.
While Coors Field is not kind to pitchers, neither is Sutter Health Park and tonight's game has a total of 10 runs for the over/under. Soderstrom is hitting .254 with a .911 OPS at home. He is also hitting .262 with an .860 OPS against right-handers and is 2-for-6 against Peralta.
Thanks to his hitting streak, Soderstrom has recorded two hits, runs, and runs batted in six straight games and in seven of his last eight games. Getting Peralta in his home ballpark tonight, I like that trend to continue.
Pick: Tyler Soderstrom Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + Runs Batted In
