Parker Messick Under 4.5 Strikeouts
Parker Messick is an intriguing prospect, but this is a brutal draw for his first MLB start.
I project the Dodgers lineup as the second-toughest to strike out in MLB. And, on top of his typical Opening Day pitch cap, there’s a risk Messick gets chased even earlier if things go sideways.
I have Messick getting pulled around Mookie Betts’ third plate appearance, projecting Under 4.5 strikeouts closer to -210.
Messick did a great job last season getting ahead in the count, with hitters taking strikes at an elevated rate. That didn’t carry over into Spring, where he struggled to get ahead, and his called strike rate regressed closer to league average, which is what we’d expect.
I’m projecting him closer to a 22% strikeout rate to open the season, and that’s a tough pitch profile against the Dodgers’ elite lineup.
