Mets vs Phillies Preview
At the start of the season, many expected the Phillies, Braves, and Mets to battle it out for first place in the NL East. While the Braves have not lived up to expectations thus far, they did sweep the Mets in Atlanta. The Mets have now lost six games in a row and have scored just 14 runs in that span.
The Mets will look to settle the score with the Braves next week, but first, they will head to Philadelphia for an important series. They are tied for first place with the Phillies.
New York swept the Phillies in April at Citi Field, where they are 27-10 this season. However, they are just 18-20 on the road, which could loom large this weekend.
As a team, the Mets are hitting just .204 with nine extra-base hits during their losing streak. Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso are a combined 12-for-67 (.179) with 17 strikeouts during the streak.
They have had middling levels of success against Zack Wheeler. They are hitting around .260 against him collectively.
Starling Marte is 7-for-25 (.280) with a double and triple against Wheeler. He also has been the hottest Mets' bat as he enters tonight's game on a five-game hitting streak and is 7-for-16 (.437) in that span.
Like the Mets, the Phillies are not far removed from some struggles of their own. They went through a 1-9 stretch that extended into June. Since then, they are 7-2 and have won their last three series. That includes taking three of four from the Marlins to begin this week.
They return home tonight and always feel better doing that with their ace Zack Wheeler on the mound.
Wheeler enters this start 7-2 with a 2.76 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts in 88 innings. He ranks in the MLB top 10 in wins, WHIP, and strikeouts.
Wheeler spent 2013-2019 with the Mets and will make his 17th career start against them, going 5-5 with a 3.53 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 102 innings.
He struck out nine while allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings in his first start against them this season, but the Mets won in extra innings.
Star first baseman Bryce Harper took batting practice yesterday, working to return from a wrist injury. While they wait for his return, the Phillies have gotten contributions up and down the lineup.
Alec Bohm, Brandon Marsh, Max Kepler (two home runs), J.T. Realmuto, and Otto Kemp are all hitting over .300 over the last week. Bohm has a hit in nine of his last 10 games.
Trea Turner is hitless in his last two games, but he still has four multi-hit games over his last 10 games. Ever consistent, he is hitting .300 in June and .300 for the season.
Mets vs Phillies Prediction, Betting Analysis
The Mets offense has struggled of late. They have just nine extra base hits over their last six games and, as a result, are averaging just 9.7 total bases per game.
Their team away batting average (.241) is worse than their .249 at home. Most notably, Lindor is hitting .200 on the road compared to .336 at Citi Field.
Lindor will be the first man to face Wheeler tonight, and if his road struggles continue, the team might follow.
The Mets have recorded 12 total bases or fewer in four of their last six games. Wheeler does not allow a lot of traffic or hard contact. He has allowed a 32.9% Hard Hit Percentage and has a .199 xBA.
Wheeler has allowed just 23 extra base hits in 14 starts thus far, and is typically a strong bet for six innings.
If he keeps their bats in check again, the Phillies may only need to cover six to nine outs to keep the Mets under 13 total bases again.
Pick: Mets Team Total Under 12.5 Total Bases (-120, DraftKings)
