The Yankees week in the Windy City continued as they made their way to Wrigley Field for a matchup with the Cubs, though this week has been more favorable for their pitchers than hitters. Over the last four games, Yankees starting pitchers have combined to allow 12 hits and one earned run over their last 26 innings.
One would think that would translate to an undefeated stretch, but the Yankees dropped the final two games to the White Sox in extra innings and did not score until extra innings in the series finale. Their bats were quiet again yesterday, but solo home runs from Spencer Jones and Amed Rosario were enough to give the Yankees a 2-0 victory over the Cubs.
Over the last two months, the Yankees have hit .220 as a team while scoring four runs per game. They have been without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton for that entire stretch and recently placed Cody Bellinger on the IL as well, preventing him from facing his former team this week. With that in mind, Jones will be needed to stay hot. His second stint in the MLB has gone much better since his initial call-up, and he is now up to four home runs, a .736 OPS and a 109 wRC+.
The Yankees did break out for nine runs on Monday to get Max Fried off the hook after he allowed three runs in the first inning. He would only last three innings as his pitch count would rise to 66 pitches after 57 in his first start off the IL. He may be in the 70-80 pitch range, which may not be good news for the Cubs.
As a Brave, Fried dominated the Cubs and was 4-0 with a 1.38 ERA at Wrigley Field. He is 6-1 against them overall, dropping his decision against them as a Yankee last season.

Decimated by injuries to their starting rotation this season, the Cubs received good news yesterday as Edward Cabrera made another rehab start. However, they still figure to be active trying to add another arm or two before Monday's trade deadline. One addition that they have already made was for David Peterson from the Mets. Peterson's numbers for the season have not been pretty, but he has allowed two runs or fewer in four of his five starts as a Cub.
