Nick Galaida's Royals vs White Sox Preview, Picks
Shane Smith has been a bright spot for the White Sox this season, and for that reason, the organization is going to be very mindful of his second-half workload in a year where he has already thrown a career-high number of innings.
Manager Will Venable has been open with the media about this fact, and specifically mentioned probably not pushing Smith into the 6th inning in certain situations.
In Smith's most recent outing, he threw 101 pitches and completed six innings of work, but that was one night after the White Sox used five bullpen arms.
Prior to that, Smith hadn't faced more than 20 batters in a game since before the All-Star Break.
If Smith is up above 75 pitches after five frames against the Royals tonight, there is a good chance that his day will be done.
