Doug Ziefel’s Mariners vs Braves Preview
The Mariners have gone cold of late, dropping four of their last five and seven of their last 10. However, after yesterday's offensive outburst, they have a chance to take this series.
They'll have an excellent opportunity to keep the bats hot against Braves starter Spencer Strider. Strider has not quite looked the same since returning from injury earlier this season, and the numbers show it.
Strider enters with a 4.97 ERA and 4.78 FIP. He has still flashed great swing and miss stuff, but his inability to get ahead of hitters consistently has put him in hitters' counts where he's been hit hard.
The Mariners' lineup profiles as the inverse of Strider. They do strike out quite a bit, but they have also done damage when putting the ball in play against right-handed pitchers, as they rank 6th in wRC+ and 12th in OPS.
With Strider not showing any signs of positive regression, look for the Mariners to make loud contact against him in this one.
On the other side of this matchup, the Braves have not been in their best form of late either. They lost a series to Chicago earlier this week and are in danger of dropping another one today.
The issue has mainly been at the dish, and while this has been a season-long decline for this lineup, the struggles of Ronald Acuna Jr. lately have taken the spark out of the order.
This afternoon, they'll face a veteran in Luis Castillo. While we've seen Castillo begin to decline in his age-32 season, his command is as good as ever, and that has allowed him to find success against aggressive lineups like the one he'll see today.
Castillo has thrown first-pitch strikes at an above-average rate this year. The Braves are near the top of the league in zone swing rate, but also have the ninth-lowest zone contact rate.
Look for Castillo to use the Braves' tendencies against them as he navigates their lineup efficiently this afternoon.
Mariners vs Braves Prediction, Betting Analysis
Neither of these teams is in their form right now, but it's clear the Mariners are playing with much more motivation, sitting just 3.5 games out of the AL West while currently holding the third Wild Card spot.
Meanwhile, the Braves' season is academic at this point, and it has caused their lineup to lose its momentum. Look for the Mariners to get an early jump on the Braves and take this series as they pursue a spot in the postseason.
