Tanner McGrath’s Mariners vs Tigers Preview
One of our Bet Labs betting systems — powered by the one and only Evan Abrams — popped for this game.
Contrarian Unders for Winning Teams targets Unders between two ballclubs with winning records, specifically when the public is on the over (more than 65% of the bets).
In matchups between winning teams, sportsbooks often inflate totals due to perceived offensive capability. Yet, these teams also tend to have stronger pitching and tighter late-game execution, leading to a profitable edge on the Under.
There are other reasons why I adore this Under.
First, our own Sean Zerillo projects just 7.3 runs for the matchup, and our Action PRO report shows Sharp and Big money are coming in on that side.
Second, while the weather should be hot and humid in Detroit, the wind is blowing in from right-center field quite heavily (up to 15 MPH). Comerica is a noted pitcher’s park (98 Park Factor, 91 Home Run Factor), and early-afternoon games in Detroit tend to be very low scoring.
Third, I love the starting pitching matchup.
Mariners starter George Kirby is having a down year by his standards (4.22 ERA), but he’s been underperforming (3.48 xERA, 3.57 FIP, 3.23 xFIP), and he’s still among MLB’s best command-and-control pitchers (4.5% BB, 115 Location+).
While Tigers starter Casey Mize is overperforming (2.63 ERA, 3.13 xERA, 3.79 FIP, 4.00 xFIP), he’s still on pace for a career year (1.3 fWAR) behind a career-high strikeout-minus-walk rate (14.7%) and Pitching+ mark (104).
These are two solid lineups, and neither bullpen inspires me much. However, there are too many reasons to expect a low-scoring ballgame in this early-afternoon Saturday matchup.
Pick: Under 7.5 (-102, BetMGM)
