Mariners vs Dodgers MLB Betting Preview

Seattle Mariners Betting Preview

In what the Mariners' front office surely hopes is his last start with the team, Emerson Hancock will have the tall task of conquering the Los Angeles Dodgers on the road. Away from Seattle, Hancock's 3.45 ERA certainly isn't the worst, but his 4.83 xFIP tells a slightly different story.

The right-hander has managed an insane 45.8% fly-ball rate away from home — almost 10 points higher than his home mark — and he's given up six home runs in 47 innings. Hitters are slugging .375 with a .292 on-base against Hancock in his road starts, compared to .325 and .242 in the reverse split. He's simply a sitting duck most times, throwing a ton of strikes with a low 6.3% walk rate and yielding a poor 43.6% hard-hit rate and 9.5% barrel rate.

Now, his results on the surface are more or less fine, aside from a rocky June, and he's pitched to a 1.23 ERA over 14 2/3 innings this month. Having said that, his strikeout numbers are nowhere near were they were in the first two months of the season, and his K-rate continues to fall, sinking under 20% this month. You're never going to miss a ton of bats against the Dodgers, but on the whole, if you're a guy with poor contact metrics, you're going to want to find those strikeouts as much as possible.

Los Angeles Dodgers Betting Preview

Well, Eric Lauer isn't particularly fond of the strikeout, but he's found ways around it throughout his career. A 15% strikeout rate is still awfully low, however, and it's come along with an extreme 38% fly-ball rate.

That's led to some tricky expected numbers with Lauer's xSLG jumping from .419 a year ago to .473, and despite a noticeable drop in xBA since joining the Dodgers, Lauer's xSLG is still a massive concern. The hard-hit rate against him has improved slightly, and is now firmly better than average, but his barrel rate still stands in double digits. Unfortunately for him in this matchup, Seattle ranks 18th in OPS to fly-ballers — five spots higher than it ranks in the reverse split.

Lauer's allowed eight homers now in his last six starts, and the walks have also begun to pile up. He is a FIP nightmare, but he could easily be rescued by the Mariners — or his own offense.

L.A. is not necessarily at its best right now — certainly after falling to Seattle on Tuesday — but it still owns a .167 Isolated Power in the last two weeks with a solid .254 average. Strikeouts and a lack of walks have been a massive issue for this normally disciplined team, but it'll have a great shot at turning things around against Hancock.

Mariners vs Dodgers Pick, Betting Analysis

Well, as Steve Harvey says at the top of Family Feud, we've got a good one for you today. We've got two fly ball machines pitted against one another inside Dodger Stadium — a great home run park — and neither guy has had any luck with strikeouts. That should mean L.A.'s let off the hook a bit with its poor plate discipline numbers, and its superior power should shine through.

For Lauer, he's not really a whole lot better — in fact, he may be worse — but Seattle owns the 19th-best wRC+ versus lefties, compared to 11th against righties. There's a clear mismatch here given many of its best bats are left-handed, and the Mariners also don't have enough power in my eyes to really bother Lauer.

It could be a dead period for this Dodgers offense and a narrative game for Hancock as he looks to solidify his trade value, but there's really no reason in my eyes not to take L.A. at this number.
