Kenny Ducey’s Rangers vs Diamondbacks Preview
The Patrick Corbin renaissance is quickly coming to an end. After a brilliant month of July where he racked up 28 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings — sneaking his ERA under four runs — he's gone the opposite direction in August. The strikeouts have dissipated and the walks are piling up, and it's amounted to a 7.17 ERA.
Corbin did have an encore performance against the Angels last time out, working eight scoreless innings, and perhaps it was a case of the lefty pitching well to his home park. At Globe Life Field, he owns a 3.20 ERA, and on the road he's running a 5.43 ERA.
That's what comes along with being a fly-ball pitcher, and now he'll head to one of the top hitter's parks in the league in Arizona. While we don't see a lot of home runs being hit at Chase Field, its spacious nature makes it difficult to pitch to outs through the air.
Fortunately for Corbin, his outfield ranks fifth in Outs Above Average this year and was fifth in August as well.
It's about time we recognize Ryne Nelson for all his solid work. He owns a 3.53 ERA this season, which is rather remarkable when you consider he's lacked palpable strikeout stuff and has given up a bunch of hard-hit balls in the air.
Nelson's Expected ERA is a tidy 3.94, thanks to a low walk rate and an improved .254 xBA. He's still very prone to giving up home runs, but he's surrendered just three in 63 1/3 innings pitched in Arizona versus 10 on the road.
Like Corbin, Nelson benefits from a big park and a great outfield, pitching in front of the seventh-best in baseball by OAA, and he continues to remain rock steady at home. His ERA at Chase Field is a glistening 2.42, and with some slight gains in the strikeout department, things are looking up.
Rangers vs Diamondbacks Prediction, Betting Analysis
The Diamondbacks may rank fifth in OPS to fly-ball pitchers, but on the whole they've been very bad lately. Arizona is 21st in wRC+ over the last two weeks, and its Isolated Power is a meek .161 to go along with a dreadful strikeout rate.
With that, I think we have to trust in the matchup for Corbin. He may be regressing, but he's still been good at home — and the park he'll work in on Monday should set up quite similarly. Both outfields have done great work this season, but Arizona is coming off a poor August by the metrics.
With the Rangers swinging the bats incredibly well, and their pitcher doing just enough to earn our trust here, the call is easy.
