Tony Sartori's Blue Jays vs Dodgers Preview
At 41 years old, Max Scherzer is not the pitcher he once was. That said, he has shown this postseason that he can still elevate his game in the moments that matter most.
In his lone ALCS start against the Seattle Mariners, Scherzer surrendered just two runs on three hits over nearly six innings. That success is likely to continue against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team he has consistently performed well against.
Over the past 12 meetings, the right-hander is 4-2 with a 1.43 ERA and 0.96 WHIP.
Scherzer will need to be great once again, especially considering he is unlikely to receive much run support with Tyler Glasnow on the mound for Los Angeles. Through 113 combined plate appearances against Glasnow, this current Toronto Blue Jays roster has produced just a .210 batting average and .222 expected batting average (xBA).
While Scherzer has risen to the occasion this postseason, Glasnow is operating on an even higher level. In three playoff appearances, the right-hander boasts a 0.68 ERA and 1.13 WHIP.
Each of those three games finished with eight or fewer total runs scored.
Glasnow’s dominance is a continuation of his regular-season form. In 18 starts, he posted a 3.19 ERA and 1.10 WHIP.
His advanced metrics were equally impressive, as he ranked in the top quarter of the league in expected ERA (xERA), xBA, average exit velocity and strikeout rate.
He has only faced the Blue Jays twice over the past two seasons but excelled in those outings, recording a 1-0 record with a 2.31 ERA and 1.11 WHIP.
Blue Jays vs Dodgers Prediction, Betting Analysis
While both lineups have plenty of firepower, the total of eight runs appears to be an overadjustment. Both starting pitchers have been dominant this postseason, and both have strong track records against Monday’s opponent.
Lastly, there have been six or fewer total runs scored in six of Los Angeles’ past seven games.
Pick: Under 8 (+100 | Play to -110)
Moneyline
I lean toward Los Angeles, but I don't want to fade Scherzer.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like Los Angeles to cover, but I'm staying away for the same reason listed above.
Over/Under
As mentioned, I'm betting Under 8.
