Mike Ianniello’s Nationals vs Yankees Preview
Brad Lord made his MLB debut at the end of March and has remained with the Nationals for the entire season, working between the bullpen and the rotation. Lord has a solid 3.46 ERA in 29 relief appearances and 12 starts. He had been more effective working out of the bullpen than as a starter.
His xERA sits nearly a full run higher at 4.36, and he is not a guy who strikes out many hitters. Behind Lord is the worst bullpen in the league. The Nationals rank 30th with a 4.60 xFIP from their relievers.
Washington’s offense has been up and down this season. They have talented pieces, but their young stars have struggled to remain consistent throughout the summer. The Nationals are 21st in scoring and sit 27th in home runs.
They are led by young stars James Wood and CJ Abrams on offense. Wood has an .831 OPS on the season. However, both of them have been slumping recently. They both have an OPS below .700 over the last 30 days.
Rookie Cam Schlittler made his big-leagues debut on July 9 and has posted solid results with a 3.22 ERA through seven starts. The Yankees' top pitching prospect has 38 strikeouts through 36 innings and is coming off the best start of his career.
In his last outing, Schlittler had a perfect game going through six innings. He pitched into the seventh inning before ending his day with one hit and no runs while striking out eight batters. Schlitter has had issues locating his pitches, but his stuff is electric.
Scoring runs has never been a problem for the Yankees. They are second in the league in runs and have clubbed the most home runs by a wide margin. New York has the best team OPS and is capable of putting up double digits in any game.
Aaron Judge continues to pace the league with a 1.108 OPS, but his running mate, Giancarlo Stanton, has been scorching hot since returning from the injured list. Stanton is batting .448 with a 1.638 OPS over the last two weeks and has hit six home runs over the previous 10 games. Ben Rice is also hitting the ball well right now, and Jazz Chisholm is coming off a two-homer game last night.
Nationals vs Yankees Prediction, Betting Analysis
Schlitter is coming off the best start of his young career, but he has had issues locating his pitches this season. His fastball is dominant, but he has issued 16 walks in seven starts. He has also had some issues locating his slider, which has resulted in it being left over the heart of the plate.
Washington has a below-average offense, but they rank 15th in runs scored over the last two weeks and will be in their much better splits against a right-handed pitcher. The Nationals are seventh in the league in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers over the last two weeks. The Yankees rank second.
Lord has been solid but has not been as effective as a starter, and his xERA is nearly a full run higher than his current ERA. Behind Lord is the worst bullpen in baseball, with the highest reliever xFIP in the league. The Yankees' offense hits more home runs than anybody and will be able to jump on the Nationals' pitching staff from start to finish.
The over is 7-3 in the last 10 Yankees games, and the best bet on Monday night is for the total to go over once again.
