World Baseball Classic Pool D Odds, Predictions
Pool D is essentially a two-horse race. The Dominican Republic and Venezuela are both full of not just MLB players, but superstars, and as a result, are heavily favored to win the group.
The Dominican Republic roster features Juan Soto, Julio Rodríguez, Fernando Tatis Jr., Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Manny Machado, and Ketel Marte, and that doesn't even include the pitchers. Phillies front-line starter Cristopher Sánchez and 2022 Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara headline the rotation, while flamethrowers like Gregory Soto, Camilo Doval, Seranthony Domínguez, and Abner Uribe will come out of the bullpen.
While the Dominican Republic roster is amazing on paper, the Venezuelan roster has star power of its own. William Contreras and Salvador Perez give the team a great mix of youth and experience in a premier catching duo, while the outfield features 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. and rising stars Wilyer Abreu and Jackson Chourio. The infield is arguably the strongest unit on the team, headlined by Luis Arraez, Eugenio Suárez, Maikel Garcia, and Gleyber Torres, while also including Willson Contreras, Ezequiel Tovar, and Andrés Giménez.
Those two teams combine to dominate the odds to win the group, but the rest of the pool has enough current MLB talent to make things interesting. Israel and Nicaragua have a few MLB players on each roster, but the Netherlands is likely the only team with the depth to keep things competitive.
The Netherlands' roster features veterans such as Kenley Jansen, Ozzie Albies, and Xander Bogaerts, while also featuring recognizable names such as Ceddanne Rafaela, two Profar brothers (Jurickson and Juremi), and Didi Gregorious.
The game between the Dominican Republic and Venezuela will likely decide the winner of the group, and although the Dominican Republic is favored in that matchup, Venezuela won the matchup between those teams in the 2023 WBC, which led to it winning the group.
