New York Yankees Betting Preview: Yankees Entering their 'June Swoon'

In recent years under Aaron Boone, the Yankees seem to have one prolonged stretch where they struggle, and fans have started calling it their "June Swoon". It appeared that it may have come early, as their bats had gone cold and they lost 10 of 14 games. However, in a scoreless game, Aaron Judge hit a 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning against the Rays last Sunday, a swing game as they salvaged a split in the abbreviated series.

The Yankees have now won five straight games while scoring seven runs in each of the last three games. That includes an 8-2 thumping of the Athletics last night, with four runs coming off former Yankee Luis Severino.

Judge's walk-off home run is still the only home run he has hit in the last two weeks. He will look for another, just 53 miles away from his hometown, but he remains tied for fourth in the MLB in home runs. Ben Rice matched him with his 17th home run of the year as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles last night. He will be looking for his fourth consecutive multi-hit game tonight, and he is up to second in the MLB with a 1.047 OPS.

After a pair of down years by his standards, Paul Goldschmidt has performed more in line with his career averages with six home runs, 18 runs batted in, and .870 OPS in 32 games. His three-run home run in the first inning dealt the Athletics an early blow from which they would not recover. Even with Rice taking over primarily at first base, Goldschmidt has forced himself into the lineup more often of late, though those decisions will get more difficult when Giancarlo Stanton is activated off the IL.

Even during their rough patch, the Yankees' pitching staff, particularly their starters, held up well. Cam Schlittler and Max Fried have gotten most of the attention, and now long-time ace Gerrit Cole is back as well. However, Ryan Weathers has been one of the best offseason acquisitions by any team this season.

Through 10 starts, Weather has a 3.14 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 57 and 1/3 innings. He has allowed two runs or fewer in six of those starts, including a tough luck loss to the Athletics in April, when he allowed just one run in eight innings.

Athletics Betting Preview: A's Offense Has Disappointed

The Athletics may not have the name recognition of some of the Yankees' hitters, but given their second-half finish last night, their offense has been a bit disappointing. The Athletics are 20th in runs scored this season, a real surprise given their current home ballpark. They do have a higher OPS at home (.754), but it has translated into just 0.17 more runs per game.

Last year's breakout star, Nick Kurtz, is still having a strong second season with a .900 OPS. He did not reach base for two straight games after his 48-game on-base streak came to an end. However, he quickly put that to bed with a home run in his first at-bat last night, his ninth of the year.

Shea Langeliers got off to a torrid start, but he has tailed off and is hitting just .140 off the last two weeks. Still, with 13 home runs and a .896 OPS, he is a strong candidate to make his first All-Star team this season.

However, Tyler Soderstrom, Brent Rooker, and Lawrence Butler have all had disappointing seasons to this point. Additionally, Jacob Wilson, last year's rookie of the year runner-up to Kurtz, is currently on the IL, as is Max Muncy. Without much length in their lineup currently, the Athletics have lost six of their last seven games while scoring three runs or fewer in all six losses.

On the mound, J.T. Ginn has enjoyed a breakout season with a 3.19 ERA and 1.5 WAR. Ginn had a three-start stretch when he pitched six innings while allowing two earned runs or fewer. That included a tough-luck loss to the Angels when he took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against the Angels, but lost it and the game on a two-run Zach Neto walk-off home run. He did not bounce back well after that, needing 73 pitches to get through 2 and 1/3 innings against the Padres.

Yankees vs Athletics Pick, Betting Analysis

Last night, Severino was only able to record three outs, and the Athletics had to cycle through eight pitchers. That means they will need some innings from Ginn tonight. If he goes 5 and 1/3 innings tonight, he will cover his outs line tonight.

However, the longer he goes, the more runs he may give up.

He has a tough assignment tonight as the Yankees are third in wRC+ against right-handed pitchers this season. They have scored 30 runs in their last three games, and two of the starters allowed four runs in that span. Additionally, their lineup is conducive to mashing in a minor league park, as they showed last night.

The Yankees have scored at least seven runs in four games at Sutter Heath Park since the start of last season.

Pick: J.T. Ginn Over 2.5 Earned Runs (-114, DraftKings)
