The Toronto Blue Jays host the New York Yankees in the first of a three-game series on Friday night. This game is the 10th meeting between these two teams this season as the Yankees have won six of the first nine matchups.
Will the Yankees continue their great play against the Blue Jays and the rest of the league in general, or can the Blue Jays get back on track on their home field?
Will Montgomery and the Yankees Keep Their Win Streak Alive?
The New York Yankees enter this contest in outstanding form as they have won seven straight games. That being said, I believe the win streak comes to an end as left-hander Jordan Montgomery is slated to take the mound.
Montgomery has some great surface-level numbers this season as he is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA and 0.98 WHIP through 12 starts. However, his underlying metrics are not nearly as great.
This season, Montgomery possesses a .322 xwOBA and .278 xBA. His surface-level stats also take a slight dip when pitching on the road this season as he possesses a 2.84 ERA and 1.26 WHIP.
The Yankees have lost in four of Montgomery's five road starts this season (80%), and while that one win was against the Blue Jays, I expect a bounce-back performance from Toronto as they left 15 runners on base in that game.
Montgomery may not get a ton of run support in this contest as the Yankees are slated to go against right-hander Ross Stripling. Over 110 career plate appearances against Stripling, this current Yankees roster possesses a mere .242 BA, .343 SLG, and .290 wOBA.
Can the Blue Jays Capitalize Against a Lefty?
The Toronto Blue Jays also enter this game in good form as they have won 15 of their last 21 games.
Through 15 appearances on the mound this season, the righty Stripling is 3-1 with a 3.14 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. His numbers are even better at home as he possesses a 2.70 ERA at the Rogers Centre.
Stripling's metrics suggest that more success is coming as he boasts a .308 xwOBA and .259 xBA. Over his last two starts, Stripling has been dominant as he allowed just one hit and no runs in each of those outings.
Toronto has won in four of Stripling's seven starts this season (57%). Stripling should get a good amount of run support in this game as the Blue Jays are slated to against the left-hander Montgomery.
