Check out the Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Sam Patterson prediction for UFC Abu Dhabi on Saturday, July 25, along with my betting preview and breakdown.
Sam Patterson and Santiago Ponzinibbio will clash at welterweight at UFC Abu Dhabi Saturday, nds the age difference between these two fighters will undoubtedly be the headline.
Ponzinibbio is nearly 40, ten years the elder of Patterson, and this very much could be the last time we see him inside of the octagon. Patterson is rightfully the heavy favorite in this spot and I will be seeking the best avenue to capture value on his path to victory.

Patterson is 4-1 since moving to the welterweight division, with his only loss coming to one of the most difficult puzzles to solve in the sport, Michael “Venom” Page. It was far from a stellar performance from either man, but I am willing to give Patterson a pass given the specific matchup. It was clear prior to that decision loss that not only is Patterson more durable with the added weight, but that he is simultaneously filling out his 6’3’’ frame and improving his skillset beyond primarily being a grappler.
Patterson put away both Danny Barlow and Trey Waters inside the first round at kickboxing range to the surprise of fans and analysts alike. Patterson undoubtedly has the power to finish opponents now in addition to enjoying a 78-inch reach at 170 pounds.
Patterson has the gift of youth on his side when stepping into the octagon with Ponzinibbio, and by rounding out his entire skillet in recent years, he has the ability to press his physical advantage, as well.
Ponzinibbio is a skilled counter-striker with above-average power. He has never been afraid to mix it up, usually content to take a shot to give one. However, at his current state, this will create an awful stylistic matchup against Patterson in addition to having physical disadvantages.
Patterson would be making a mistake to underestimate the power of Ponzinibbio, but outside of an early counter-shot that stuns him in a wild exchange, he should be able to control every aspect of this fight and is live for the early finish.
Ponzinibbio’s durability is not what it once was. In fact, it may be entirely shot at this point. It has been more than a year since the last octagon appearance of Ponzinibbio, in which he was knocked out in the first frame by Daniel Rodriguez. D-Rod has always been a tough out during his UFC tenure, but he is far from a power-puncher. Rodriguez had not won a fight by knockout since a victory over Preston Parsons in July of 2021.
Inactivity has been a theme of Ponzinibbio’s late-career run in the UFC. He fought just once in each of 2023 and 2024 before fighting twice in the first half of 2025. Another year has passed, and while the boxing IQ, aggressive nature and experience of Ponzinibbio conjures up excitement upon seeing his name on a card, I find it highly unlikely he can withstand the type of brawl we’ve seen him endure in the past.
Ponzinibbio is a fighter who has taken an immense amount of damage throughout his career. He was 9-2 in his career through 11 bouts, but since that point he has suffered three knockout losses in addition to surviving two other fights in which his opponent landed more than 100 significant strikes.
One specific area of improvement that gives me confidence Patterson will not suffer an upset is his improved head movement. It was easy for somebody the length of Patterson to rely on tall man’s defense that left his chin often exposed. I was impressed in the strides he has made to avoid absorbing power shots coming his way, especially in the fight with Barlow, brief though it was.
Ponzinibbio’s win condition is tied entirely to finding a power shot that lands flush in the early going. With that said, I do not see it happening and believe it will be Patterson that drops the elder statesman in relatively short order. The only real question here surrounds the finish itself and whether Patterson looks for the sub portion of the finish following the club.
Ponzinibbio vs. Patterson Pick, Prediction
Ponzinibbio has never been submitted in his MMA career, but when you are trying to survive on the mat with a fighter who can sink in a choke in an instant, it’s a dangerous game to play. I am willing to pay a small tax to include the submission finish in the potential outcomes for Patterson, opting instead to shave off the third round, pinpointing the finish to happen within the first ten minutes.
The best price in the market I’ve found is on DraftKings when creating a SGP. Combining the Patterson moneyline with under 599.5 seconds gets you to -140. However, I’d be willing to play this specific combination all the way up to -160.
John's Pick: Sam Patterson by KO/TKO or submission in round 1 or 2 -140 (DraftKings)
