The ACC has been one of the most competitive conferences in the country this season, but it's not your typical teams at the top. Two of those contenders will square off Saturday as the Clemson Tigers face the NC State Wolfpack.
While each of these teams' records are solid, they have been challenging to handicap as the Tigers are 14-14 ATS, and the Wolfpack are not much better at 14-13-2. Of course, much of that has to do with the strength of the conference, but it may also point toward value in the underdog.
Do the Wolfpack have what it takes to even the series and cover the spread? Let's take a closer look to find out.
NC State Wolfpack
If you're looking for an explosive offensive club, well, look no further, as the Wolfpack have put up a number of gaudy performances. However, they were not the same team in the first meeting, as the Tigers held them to just 64 points.
Looking deeper into that game, NC State uncharacteristically had an effective field goal percentage of 36.8 and went just 8-for-31 from beyond the arc.
I highlight their 3-point shooting percentage as drain shots from deep are the Wolfpack's key to victory. Terquavion Smith, Jarkel Joiner and Casey Morsell may not be the most efficient 3-point shooters, but they will provide the volume needed to expose the Tigers.
We should expect some positive regression for the Wolfpack here; meaning points should come in bunches.
Clemson Tigers
Clemson's ascension in the ACC this season is primarily due to its dynamic offense. The Tigers have gotten a majority of their points from the perimeter, as they have a formidable backcourt trio that is proficient from all three levels.
However, the X-factor for the Tigers in this matchup will be the big man, PJ Hall. Hall was almost non-existent in the first meeting, but everything is pointing to a big bounce-back performance this time around.
NC State has been ravaged from close proximity as nearly 42 percent of the points it has allowed have come from that area, and the opposition has made 59 attempts as well.
In the first matchup, the Wolfpack committed to slowing down Hall, and it forced him to pass out of the paint. However, we know the Tigers have shooters, and Hall set a season-high in assists that game. So expect the offense to run through him, and the Tigers could have multiple avenues to put up points in this matchup.
Clemson vs. NC State Betting Pick
The first meeting was not indicative of the caliber of this NC State club. While the Tigers deserve credit, I find it hard that they lock them down again from the perimeter.
The same goes for the other end of the court. The Wolfpack will need to pick their poison as Hall is primed for a big game inside, but if they over-commit, the Tigers will make them pay from the outside.
The end total of the first meeting was 142, and I'm expecting the market to open around that number. If we get a total of 144 or lower, the over is the play, as both offenses should have plenty of success in this one.
