East Carolina Pirates Betting Preview: Not Turning the Ball Over

East Carolina comes in off a 56-3 blasting of FCS Campbell last weekend, which helped get the bad taste out of its mouth from how its opener against NC State concluded.

The Pirates thew the ball very effectively against the Camels, as quarterback Katin Houser completed 72% of his throws for 314 yards and two touchdowns.

15 different players caught a pass for East Carolina, which was able to rotate some of the second-team offense into the game in the second half.

I've been impressed with East Carolina and its ability to play without turning the ball over, something that was such a problem last season. If Houser continues to protect the ball and complete passes at a high rate, this offense will be dangerous in American Conference play.

Defensively, East Carolina has really been stout against the run, as it's allowing an average of just 1.7 yards per rush this year. The defensive line has made the most of its opportunities in getting to the quarterback and creating defensive havoc, a metric East Carolina ranks 17th in nationally.

East Carolina has registered four sacks and 19 tackles for loss this season, which has aided its third down conversion percentage (31%).

This defense lost key players from last year's fairly stout group, but we've seen Kieran Davis, Ja'Marley Riddle and Preston Carr really step up for the Pirates so far.

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Betting Preview: Will Defense Hold Up?

In two games, Coastal Carolina has struggled badly this season.

The Chanticleers were blown out by Virginia in the opener. Then, last week, they were in a battle with a really bad Charleston Southern team, where poor play and turnovers by quarterback MJ Morris really handcuffed their offensive attack.

The Chants had three scoring drives of at least 15 plays and didn't record a touchdown until there were 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

For the season, Coastal Carolina has struggled to sustain drives and accumulate explosive plays, as its offense is averaging just 4.4 yards per play while ranking just 122nd nationally in EPA per play.

Only two of six red zone opportunities have hit paydirt for the Chants, and Morris has been inefficient as a passer, throwing for 265 yards and four interceptions without throwing a touchdown pass.

The thought was that Coastal would play at a more up-tempo speed this year offensively, but its last contest played to just nine possessions, six of which were punts or turnovers.

Defensively, Coastal was able to shut down Charleston Southern while locking down against the run and on third down. The Buccaneers were 0-of-11 on third down and averaged just 3.8 yards per carry.

This was a significant improvement from how the Chants' stop unit fared against Virginia in the opener (when Virginia scored 48 points and racked up 454 total yards).

I'm concerned about how this defense will perform when stressed against the pass, as East Carolina is going to throw it around and play at a blazing tempo. This will be interesting to watch on Saturday.

East Carolina vs Coastal Carolina Pick, Betting Analysis

I'm laying the points here with East Carolina. I bet this game early in the week, and I would come back for more even at the current price.

East Carolina has really done well in terms of taking care of the football this season, as the Pirates have a +3 turnover margin compared to Coastal’s -5 turnover ratio.

Mistakes and carelessness with the ball will be crucial here.

I love the East Carolina offense and Houser’s progression as a passer. He's taken a step in his maturation and his completion percentage is up from last year, all while not throwing a pick.

Coastal has registered just nine tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks through two weeks, and I would suspect the pocket to be clean in this game, allowing Houser to have time to let plays develop.

Coastal graded out poorly in pass coverage against Virginia and should struggle to cover the East Carolina receivers in this game.

East Carolina has done well this year to create turnovers and havoc against its opposition, and it now faces a Coastal quarterback in Morris who was benched last week and has lost confidence.

East Carolina is a much better team top to bottom than Coastal Carolina, and I don't believe that Coastal can match the Pirates score for score.

East Carolina should put up a big number, and it'll win this game and cover because negative plays will be created and Coastal will be in unfavorable third down positioning throughout.

I don’t see Coastal sustaining drives, as its converted just 28% of third down conversions up to this point.

Pick: East Carolina -7.5 (Play to -9.5)
