Louisville vs Georgia Tech Preview
Louisville Cardinals Betting Preview: Defensive Roulette
Jeff Brohm's Louisville Cardinals love operating on the margins. This season, their three losses have come by a combined nine points, and two of those came to some pretty good football teams in Ole Miss and Wake Forest.
But Louisville is wildly inconsistent, especially on defense. It lost to a struggling NC State team as it was about to fire its coach, 31-28, and was nearly upset by Syracuse before the bye.
The rushing offense is one of the country's best, led by stud running backs Isaac Brown and Keyjuan Brown (now both back and healthy) and complemented by dual-threat quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, who leads the Cardinals with 11 rushing touchdowns.
That combination of talented rushers and the uber-efficient Brohm system has proven to be deadly. Louisville ranks No. 1 in yards per play this season.
But a lacking pass rush and vulnerable secondary have led to a host of problems. Louisville lost standout Antonio Watts before the season, and prized transfer safety Koen Entringer has been in and out of the lineup for various reasons.
The defense just hasn't found a consistent rhythm.
"Havoc" describes the defense in a number of ways. While the Cardinals have secured 16 turnovers this year (12th) and are pretty stout on a down-to-down basis, they're near the bottom of the country in explosive passes allowed (118th in 20-plus-yard passes allowed, and only three teams have allowed more 30-plus-yard passes).
Louisville plays three of its final four on the road, closing with what should be a dynamic showdown with rival Kentucky. Luckily for the Card, the next two games (at Georgia Tech and at North Carolina) give the 'Ville a break from explosive offenses.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Betting Preview: Warning Lights
Before the season started, I watched a breakdown of Buster Faulkner's offense and the lengths his scheme went to in covering up some pretty bad football at Georgia Tech.
That was further buried by having a stud quarterback in Haynes King and a terrific running back in Jamal Haynes. Boy, was that an understatement.
Pushing all their chips in on Alberto Mendoza — who looked great when plugged into games with a vastly superior roster up 45-0 — always felt like a misstep, and now Tech is reportedly considering benching the sophomore.
This team just has nothing going for it. Outside of a long run broken by Justice Haynes or emerging back Trelain Maddox (a rarity behind a beat-up and bad offensive line), Tech gets zero offensively.
Red-zone woes have derailed a system that's the offensive equivalent of bend-don't-break, with just 44% of those trips inside the 20 ending in touchdowns (127th).
So, while the team's 44% Success Rate isn't all that bad and helps boost compiling stats, the lack of Finishing Drives is concerning.
It's the opposite on defense. This unit doesn't bend all that much, but it breaks frequently.
The Jackets rank 122nd in explosive play rate allowed (9.3%) and 113th in Adjusted EPA Per Play allowed. It doesn't benefit from turnovers, nor does it force them, and there's almost nothing resembling a pass rush.
Turning over coordinators is hard, especially when one of them (Faulkner) is such a difference-maker.
But the long-term health of this program needs to be brought into question, as head coach Brent Key, who has a specialized background in offensive line development, can't develop an offensive line.
Tech is a loss away from the rest of its season becoming moot, and with Wake Forest and Georgia still on tap, the locker room outlook probably isn't very rosy.

Louisville vs Georgia Tech College Football Pick, Best Bet
Over the point total has been a heavy pick among influential bettors this week. It opened at 58.5 points and moved through 59 and 62 without hesitation. Most of the sharp moves came at better numbers, and chasing at this price isn't a very savvy move.
What Georgia Tech isn't very good at preventing is where Louisville thrives.
The Cardinals' offense should have no problem producing explosive runs on Saturday, even on the road. Keyjuan Brown is back in the lineup to alleviate some of the work from Isaac Brown and Kienholz.
Isaac Brown and Tre Richardson popped up on the injury report but are both expected to play. A key player, tackle Anwar O'Neal, remains out for Louisville.
Although the pass rush from the Cardinals hasn't been excellent, Georgia Tech's offensive line is riddled with injuries. Expect a more productive day from Tyler Thompson and Clev Lubin (six sacks apiece).
Tech is on a downward trajectory. Despite the schedule getting a bit easier — the last three include Pitt, Boston College and Virginia Tech — the margin of defeat is growing.
This is a team getting worn down with a thin line and without a solid answer at quarterback.
Faster starts have been the emphasis of Brohm after a couple of slower ones lost the Cards games. Expect them to jump all over the hosting Yellow Jackets as the reality of a lost season sets in.
Pick: Louisville 1H Team Total Over 20.5 (-136 or Better)
