Browns vs Saints NFL Week 9 Preview
The Browns are the definition of a fortunate football team. They are the only team in the NFL holding a winning record while simultaneously sporting a negative point differential.
According to our NFL Luck Rankings, the Browns have been the second-luckiest team this season (behind only the Broncos). Cleveland has 3.3 expected wins compared to its five actual.
All five of the Browns' victories this season have required fourth-quarter comebacks, heavily reliant on variance, including three separate walk-off field goals. That sort of late-game magic is usually unsustainable.
The schedule is also doing them absolutely zero favors. The Browns are now heading into their third consecutive road game, which marks their fourth road trip in the last five weeks.
Unsurprisingly, Cleveland performs significantly worse away from home — it owns a -8.6 point differential on the road compared to a +3 mark at home.
There's also some uncertainty at quarterback for the Browns in this one as Shedeur Sanders is set to make his season debut after Deshaun Watson suffered a concussion last week.
On the flip side, the New Orleans Saints are stepping into a massive situational rest advantage.
The Saints are coming off their bye week, allowing them to get healthy and fully prep for a tired Browns squad.
While New Orleans hasn't been a stellar bet against the spread at home so far this season, the situational handicapping factors are overwhelmingly stacked on one side of the ledger.
Browns vs Saints Prediction, Betting Analysis
When you have a well-rested home team (like the Saints) facing an opponent operating on their third straight road game that has significantly overperformed their underlying metrics (like the Browns), you simply have to blindly trust the spot.
I don't necessarily want to watch this game, but you have to hold your nose and bet the rest and travel advantages. The Browns' luck is going to run out eventually.
I'll lay the points with New Orleans here.
Pick: Saints -3 (-114)
