Colts vs Jaguars NFL Week 8 Preview
The fire sale is officially on in Indianapolis.
Following a third consecutive loss, the Colts traded away Quenton Nelson (Seahawks) and DeForest Buckner (49ers). Josh Downs has also requested a trade, while all eyes have shifted toward the team's prized possession: superstar running back Jonathan Taylor.
For now, there are no expected changes at quarterback.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen doubled down on Daniel Jones, who threw for just 108 yards last week. The veteran quarterback has struggled mightily this season, throwing more interceptions (7) than touchdowns (4) while posting a career-low completion rate of 59.6%.
There is some positive news for Indianapolis, however.
Tyler Warren is expected to return to the starting lineup after missing two games with a groin injury. The same goes for Sauce Gardner, while Downs will also suit up despite his trade request.
Warren's presence is a must for a Colts receiving room that includes 34-year-old Keenan Allen and journeyman Laquon Treadwell.
The question remains: Can the Colts weather the storm and put up a fight against their division rival?
The biggest question is how the offensive line will hold up against a formidable Jaguars defense. Indianapolis ranks around league average in rushing yards per game, but those numbers came with Nelson anchoring the offensive line. Taylor is already averaging a career-low 4.2 yards per carry, and losing another key piece up front certainly won't help.
The Colts defense has its own issues, ranking in the bottom 10 in points allowed per game and 11th in rushing yards allowed (124.4). Rush defense is definitely Indy's Achilles' heel on the defensive end, ranking 29th in rushing EPA allowed.
The pass defense, however, has been surprisingly solid. Indianapolis hasn't allowed a wide receiver room to reach 100 receiving yards since Week 4, while opposing receivers are averaging just 10 receptions per game.
It was a much-needed bye week for the Jaguars, who are coming off two London games filled with late-game theatrics.
Jacksonville’s defense has been its strong suit this season. Outside of the Texans (34 points), no team has scored more than 17 against this talented unit. The Jaguars rank No. 1 in rushing yards allowed per game (72.2) but have struggled mightily against the pass, ranking 30th while surrendering 274 yards per game.
Ultimately, Jacksonville’s success will hinge on Trevor Lawrence and the offense finding another gear. The Jaguars are around league average in total offensive production and have maintained a near 50-50 split between the passing and running games.
I’d be surprised if Jacksonville’s ground game doesn’t start to take off soon as Bhayshul Tuten is on the verge of a breakout. The explosive running back possesses elite speed and has already shown the ability to rip off chunk plays.
Unfortunately, several of those big gains have been wiped away by holding penalties. Still, Tuten has rushed for at least 65 yards in five of his six games this season.
I've been waiting for this offense to take the next step, and there are plenty of weapons to make it happen. Outside of Tuten, Jacksonville has a talented receiving corps led by Parker Washington. We also saw Travis Hunter become more involved offensively before the bye, recording four catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. That increased usage is a trend I expect to continue in Week 8.
Brian Thomas Jr. has also been the subject of trade speculation ahead of the upcoming deadline. He was benched for the second half against Houston and hasn't recorded a catch in either of Jacksonville's last two games, making his involvement worth watching.
One situation worth monitoring is Jakobi Meyers, who enters Sunday questionable after missing Friday’s practice with hamstring and ankle injuries. Thomas would likely be relied on to step up in his absence.
Another development I've highlighted previously is Jacksonville's increased use of two-tight-end sets. Brenton Strange has been nothing short of excellent, but the emergence of Nate Boerkircher could be just as important moving forward. The second-round pick played a career-high 55% of the snaps before the bye, and I expect his workload to consistently settle in the 50–60% range.
Colts vs Jaguars Prediction, Betting Analysis
I hinted at it earlier, but I expect the Jaguars' ground game to take off. To me, it's a matter of when, not if.
Tuten is PFF's No. 1-ranked running back and ranks among the league's best in yards after contact per carry. He draws a Colts run defense that has struggled all season and will be without one of its most important defensive players in Buckner.
With Jacksonville entering this matchup as a double-digit favorite, I expect the Jaguars to control possession and lean heavily on the ground game. That should mean a healthy workload for Tuten.
Coming off a bye, Tuten should be fresh and ready to take advantage of a spiraling Colts squad. Don't be surprised if he finally breaks the 100-yard rushing mark in this one.
Pick: Bhayshul Tuten Over 64.5 Rushing Yards (-111, Up to 69.5)
