Penguins vs. Oilers Preview
Pittsburgh Penguins
It’s been a beautiful start to Pittsburgh’s road trip, as it has come out on top against both Seattle and Calgary.
However, next is a taller task in Northern Alberta as the Penguins gear up to face an old friend, Tristan Jarry of the Oilers.
The last time these two teams squared off was last month, just a day after Jarry was traded to Edmonton for goaltender Stuart Skinner, and the Oilers were ruthless against their former netminder, winning 6-4.
And not only that, they made sure to let their buddy know they were doing just fine without him.

However, with Skinner playing last night against the Flames, I’d have to imagine that Arturs Silovs gets the nod – which I think benefits all parties involved who wear black and gold.
Silovs has been fine for the season, but as of late he’s been less than impressive. In the past 10 games, Silovs is playing to a -3.8 GSAx and an .883 SV%.
Because of that, I am a little concerned about how he fares against Edmonton, especially with Pittsburgh’s defense lacking in the past two weeks.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers look to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to the Devils in which they clearly dominated. According to MoneyPuck’s Deserve-to-Win O’Meter, the Oilers were listed at 73%, and fell victim to Jake Allen standing on his head.
So tonight should be interesting to look out for. We know the damage that Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman can do, but we still don’t know what the status is of Leon Draisaitl, who had to fly to Germany for a family emergency.
Regardless, even without Draisaitl, the Oilers looked like a determined group, after outsourcing the Canucks and Blues at a combined 11-0.
Edmonton’s ability to move the puck is elite, which is why it’s so dominant on the power play. But the problem is that the Penguins have been just as dynamic on the penalty kill, ranking in the top-five in the league, but also second in goal differential in the past 10 games.
Speaking of Hyman, he’s actually been one of the league’s most effective players in this stretch, posting an 8.5 expected goals rate, as well as tying for second in high danger chances.

Penguins vs. Oilers Prediction
I’m coming into this game feeling a little uneasy about the Pens.
As good as they’ve been, they’re also the third oldest team in the league, coming off a game last night in Western Canada. Granted (and that’s a big granted), Pittsburgh still has elite talent, despite being up there in age.
So if it was playing a different team, I wouldn’t be so concerned. But it’s the Oilers, and I can see McDavid skating circles around the Penguins and then making Silovs pay.
This may be a rout in favor of the Oil, but because the Pens played last night. Father time always wins, and in the middle of a western swing, a back to back is brutal.
Pick: Oilers -1.5
